Welcome to Parent Night! Mrs. Trisha Cole Division 5 Grade 6
Get to Know mrs. cole
Get to Know Mrs. cole Many families and students remember me as Ms. Marcus I have 3 sons ranging in age from 7-13 years and a Black Lab named Casey. I have a strong interest in the integration of technology in the classroom, digital citizenship and self-regulation.
Planner policy & parent/teacher communication As you know, this year, we will be using an ONLINE planner board using our class website. Parents can check the homework every day at www.mzmousyzclass.weebly.com. Other important information can be shared via email. My email address is cole_t@surreyschools.ca. Parents can also contact me via the school office at 604-590-3211.
Home reading Your child needs to read EVERY DAY for at least 20 minutes. Daily reading increases vocabulary, improves writing skills, increases knowledge base, improves comprehension and leads to increased engagement and success in the classroom. Ask your child to show you the strategies (Reading Powers) we have been working on in class.
homework Homework time should be a scheduled part of your evening with a consistent time and location in your home. A parent/guardian should check that all assigned work has been completed every day. (Some parents prefer that their child shows them all assigned work, even if it was completed in class)
homework is: unfinished class work research or project work website building updating e-portfolio responding to blog posts. Practicing skills on MobyMax or other apps/websites Studying for quizzes and tests
homework Incomplete homework must be completed the following day during recess, lunch and/or after school. If there has been an unexpected event that caused the student to be unable to complete his or her homework, please let me know.
Organization: An important life skill Your child has recorded the expectations for setting up his/her zippered binder. Ask him/her to show these expectations to you. Learning to file paper in the correct section and do so in a specific order is an important life skill. Well organized students experience significantly less anxiety and are more successful, on average, in class. Learning to make smooth transitions from one activity to another is another important life skill.
Excellence means good work habits Positive Attitude Active Participation in All Activities Strong Work Ethic (Best Effort Every Time) Organized Desk/Binder/Backpack Consistent Use of Planner Consistent Homework Completion Meeting Due Dates Consistently Asking For Help When Needed Self-Assessment of Understanding for Every Lesson
Team-teaching & platooning Your child has more than one teacher! “It takes a village to raise a child…” Mrs. Cole teaches Social Studies. Ms. Dillon teaches Science. Mme. Ossea teaches French. Mrs. Kingdon teaches Library Students may work with Mrs. Cole, Ms. Dillon or Mr. Basigin for Math. Students may work with Mrs. Cole or Mr. Basigin for Language Arts.
Ways to support your child Read with your child and discuss what has been read Use the MobyMax app on Edmodo to practice Math and Language Arts skills Write journals and/or blogs to summarize events at home Look at our class website every day
Ways to support your child Help your child set up a gmail account so that he/she can have access to all of the Google tools that we will use in class. Check your child’s gmail account every day to make sure he/she is responding to teacher emails and using his/her email account only for school Ask questions Get involved at school

Why use technology in the classroom? To teach 21st Century Skills of Collaboration Creativity Critical Thinking Communication To learn to use Web 2.0 Tools for broad base communication with a wide variety of ways to show learning and receive feedback. Create e-Portfolios that can follow them until they graduate
Why use technology in the classroom? “Flatten the walls of our Classroom” by communicating with students in other parts of the world about what we are learning and discover different perspectives. It is engaging, intrinsically motivating and supports differentiation for a variety of different student needs. The “Teachable Moment” of learning about Digital Citizenship

Byod (Bring your own device) The ratio of devices to students at Cindrich is approximately 6 to 1. We only get access to the ipads about 1 or 2 times per week. This makes it very difficult to fully integrate technology into the classroom or to take advantage of the opportunities technology offers. Bring Your Own Device is a program that many schools have put into place, especially for upper intermediate students.
byod BYOD allows improved access and smaller device to student ratios. This does not mean that families need to go out and buy a device for their child! All students will have access to devices on our scheduled times regardless of whether they have their own. To support BYOD, we have some information for parents as well as permission forms to be completed.
Digital citizenship Our children are Digital Natives...they have grown up in a digital world and have never known any other way. We are Digital Immigrants...we need to understand the benefits and dangers of the Digital World. Students need to be directly taught how to create a positive Digital Footprint.
