Main food groups (Copy) Carbohydrates for energy Proteins are for growth and repair Fats and oils are for storing energy (in the form of body fats) and provides insulation and protection for nerves and organs. Vitamins and minerals are for building bones and teeth and maintaining a healthy immune system.

Carbohydrates We call carbohydrates our staple food, because we have to get enough every day to provide us with energy. We can find carbohydrates in food such as: Bread Sugar Mielie meal Potato Rice Pasta

Some carbohydrates with lots of sugar gives you a short burst of energy. That is why your parents don’t want you to eat sweets before bedtime! That is why it is important to eat cereal, because it contain carbohydrates to give us energy.

Proteins Proteins are foods that make your muscles grow and for growth. Proteins build antibodies. Proteins also help to heal cuts and scrapes. We need proteins because they build our muscles and organs.

We find proteins in food such as: Meat Beans Nuts Eggs And dairy products

Fats and oils Fats and oils are foods for storing energy and protecting our organs. We need fats and oil because our body can store them and use them for energy. Certain parts of our brain and nerves needs fats to work properly. A fat layer underneath your skin insulates our body and keeps us warm. Fat layers between our organs protect these organs from injury. To many fats and oils can have a negative effect on your body and that can make you overweight and cause illnesses such as heart disease.

Food containing fats and oils: Oily fish Oily seeds Plant oils and butter and margarine

Vitamins and minerals Vitamins and minerals are foods for protecting bones, teeth and the immune system. Vitamins are good for the immune system and they protect us from illness and disease. Minerals help to build strong bones and teeth. Vitamin C is a vitamin that is found in fruits. Vitamin C helps our immune system to fight colds and flu. Calcium is a mineral that is found in dairy products. Calcium build healthy bones and teeth.
