Past ideas……

Instead of separate bellwork today, I want you to read excerpts about Samurai wisdom from the Hagakure. For each excerpt you should write a 1-2 sentence modern translation. Focus on the main idea! Be ready to discuss! THINKER: Are there similarities between ancient Samurai wisdom and how people act in today’s society?

ABC Brainstorm Get out a blank sheet of notebook paper. Label each line with the letters of the alphabet: A-Z While reading the section, you are going to try and come up with an important term, idea, concept or person that matches with each letter. You will then describe it, or write a sentence. Try and get all 26 letters!! The person with the best answers and most letters gets extra credit!

ABC Brainstorm GOOD examples: S: Steppe – geographic feature where large numbers of nomadic groups roamed in 1000AD S: Seljuk Turks moved to Asia and established an empire, but they were eventually conquered by the Mongols. BAD examples: S: Steppe S: Seljuk Turks were very successful S: Several years ago, nomadic people threatened Asian territories. Pages 138-143

Use your ABC Notes or pages 138-143! List three achievements of Genghis Khan. Where did the Mongols expand? How were they able to conquer such vast territories and large populations?
