Writing Workshop – Workshop Stations

What do you need to work on as a writer? What does your draft need? These are the questions that should guide your work today! There will be stations around the room that let you continue to work on strategies we have learned in class and work on new strategies as well! Take a moment to turn and talk with a partner – answer the two questions above. Mr. Raff and Ms. Eckhardt will be pulling small groups to work together as well!

Revision Plan Station – Working on the Big Stuff In this station you need your: Revision plan Draft Revision pens Step 1: Re-Read your draft – looking for big level changes you need to make. Step 2: Go back to your revision plan, and add anything new you noticed. Step 3: Pick one thing on your revision plan that you think still needs work. Step 4: With revision pens in hand, go back to your draft and ONLY look to revise for that ONE thing. Step 5: Repeat steps 3 and 4

Revising for Precise Language Station At this revision station you need: Precise language notes Draft Revision plan Step 1: Go back to your class notes for revising for precise language. Step 2: Read through your draft, highlighting your verbs in green highlighter. Step 3: Use the word lists in your class packet or the verbs thesaurus at the table to replace your verbs with more precise verbs. Step 4: Replace other word combinations for more precise language.

Editing Station – Editing for Sound Sentences At this station you will need: Sound sentences notes from class. Draft Revision pens Step 1: Review your notes from class for editing for sound sentences. Step 2: Go back to your draft and continue reading for sentence fragments and run-ons. Step 3: Make corrections to turn any run-on or sentence fragments into complete sentences.

Revising Station – Revising for IADD! At this station you will need: Your draft Revising pens IADD stands for: Inner thinking, action, dialogue, and details. Great narrative writers include all of these in their writing. Step 1: Read through a page of your writing. Label sentences in which you see IADD Label inner thinking sentence with an I Label action sentences with an A Label dialogue sentences with a Di Label details sentences with a D Step 2: What letter or letters are you missing most on your page. For example, you might only have a couple I sentences. Step 3: Revise to add the types of IADD you are missing the most.

Revising Station – Revising for Paragraphs and Transitions At this station you will need: Your draft Revision pens Step 1: Pick a strategy sheet to read – When do I need a new paragraph? Or Transitions – They Help your Reader Follow Sequence Step 2: Read the strategy sheet. Step 3: Read your own draft looking for places to add transitions or create a new paragraph. Step 4: Make changes using a revision pen, to your draft.
