The all new Kindle Paperwhite We are the people with the smile on the box. We are the reinventors of normal. That's why we created our newest Kindle with the world's first paperwhite display. In this way, people can read without glare in bright sunlight, at night and every minute in between. In addition, the only thing more perfect than reading is more reading.

What do you know about this?

Do you like reading? Would you like to read printed books or read on the Internet? Why? Talk about it with your partner.

Will books be replaced by the Internet? Discussion Will books be replaced by the Internet?

3 Complete the table. When What About 2000 years ago During the Sui and Tang Dynasties Today paper created printing invented the Internet growing fast, computers and the Internet used in classrooms, newspapers and magazines read online

Read the passage again and answer the questions. Why were books expensive before the invention of printing? 2. Why did knowledge and ideas spread faster when books became cheaper? 3. What does the writer think of the Internet? Because they were produced by hand. Because more people learnt to read. The Internet is still young, but it is growing very fast and may become more powerful than printing.

Free talk How often do you go to book stores? Where do you often buy books? Why?

Read the sentences. Which sentences talk about reasons and which talk about results? Books were only produced one at a time by hand. As a result, there were not many books. Because there were not many books, few people learnt to read. These machines are smaller and lighter than books, so they are easy to carry. result reason result

Ask and answer questions Ask and answer questions. Write full sentences with as a result, because or so. Why is it hard to imagine a world without printing? What was the result of few books produced? It is hard to imagine a world without printing because we have so many printed things now, for example menus, comics and schoolbooks. Few books were produced and, as a result, few people could read.

3. What happened after the printing technology developed? 4. What will happen to the books in the future? Why? After the printing technology developed, books were cheaper, so more people learnt how to read. Books might not be needed in the future because the Internet is growing quickly.

Free talk What do you think about the future of traditional printing? Will it be replaced by the Internet?

Pair work Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of books and the Internet.

Advantages Disadvantages Books Get very dusty on shelves. Take up space in the home. Be expensive. Using trees and being ungreen. Nice objects to own and hold Often relatively cheap Easy to use

Advantages Disadvantages The Internet Store lots of information. Many “books” are free. Easy to find lots of more obscure “books”. Expensive. Need to know how to use it correctly. Use electricity. Lose everything if it “crashes”. Not pleasant to read on the screen.

Writing What do you think about the future of traditional printing? Write a passage using although, but, and, etc.

Possible answer It is hard to imagine a world without printing because we have so many printed things now, for example, menus, comics and schoolbooks. Paper was first created about 2,000 years ago, but books weren’t printed. They were produced by hand, so few people could read. Printing was invented during the Sui and Tang Dynasties. After printing developed, books were cheaper, so more people learnt to

read. Today, the Internet is growing very fast, so that books might not be needed in the future. A much larger amount of information can be stored in more varied forms on the Internet than in books. As a result, in the future, the Internet will probably be more powerful than printing.

The 82-year-old Sanlian Bookstore in Beijing officially started its around-the-clock operation on April 8th.

A research released recently by the Chinese Academy of Press and Publication shows that every person in China read 4.77 printed books on average. Meanwhile, more than 50 percent of adults started to choose e-reading. More than 50 percent of people in China feel that they should read more books.
