Introduction Chinese Students/ International students Local People/ Native Speakers Exchange opinions Debate & Discuss

Native speakers may have stereotypes about international students. http://www.bbc.com/news/business-32969291 Issue

From the 2013-2014 academic year, show that 274,000 international students in the US hailed from China – far more than from any other country. The UO's Chinese student body has grown to 1,800, up from just 100 in the early 2000s. At the American English Institute on campus, 231 additional students from China are bringing their language skills up to academic standards so they can enroll. About 75 more are studying at Lane Community College. However, few locals really have had the chance to know more about the real life of international students and both traditional and contemporary Chinese culture in person. Issue

News Values Conflicts Impact How many of them are the progeny of new wealth in China? Why did they choose Eugene? What have they brought to Eugene? Is the arrival of them bad or good? Impact It is about all the international students. The arrival of international students must have brought some influences to local people’s life in some ways.

Unique It is an event for exchanging opinions. Humanity It is about people, about Chinese students, about international students and native students. International students are coming to learn but are suffering the stereotype from locals because of the negative impact that is brought by a small group. Locals are preventing their home from being international.

Target Journalist (Print) Diane Dietz (The Register-Guard) Her article “Foreign college students bring the bling to Eugene” caused a lot drastic debates between Chinese students and local people.

Perfect topics for our event Conflicts The representative of two sides will come to exchange their opinions. Impact Local community Campus students Timeliness It is happening right now. One year later, it is a good time to get all the feedback from both sides and start a new wave of debates.

Blogger Mark Baker He grew up in Eugene but lives in Seattle and Eugene. Blog: “living here”

News Values Conflict: Impact: Unique: He can see the totally different opinions. He can see the differences or similarities about the issue between Eugene (small) and Seattle (bigger). Impact: The Confucius Institute of the State of Washington Unique: An event for sharing Chinese Culture to locals. A new event for exchanging opinions or debating about the stereotype of Chinese students.

Broadcast Charlotte Nisser (KWVA 88.1 FM) A campus radio of UO It helps to keep UO music programs, sporting events, public affairs show and news broadcasts on the air.

News Values Impact Timeliness It is about all the students. It is about tuition. It is about culture. Timeliness It is happening on campus. News Values
