Foundation Stage Profile In Reception we focus on the 7 areas of learning; Communication and Language Physical Development Personal, Social and Emotional Development Literacy (Reading and Writing) Mathematical Development Knowledge and Understanding Expressive Arts and Design

Foundation Stage Profile Children work towards Early Learning Goals, which are the expectations for most children to aim towards during Reception year. By the end of Reception, some children will have achieved or exceeded these goals, some will still be working towards them, in which case they will continue this through work in Year 1. Parents will receive information in the Summer about your child’s progress towards goals.

Daily Organisation Children line up on playground, they are responsible for taking off their own coats, and handing in any books or letters to the teacher. They enter the classroom, sign in then sit on the carpet and practise recognising letters, words, numbers and shapes on the board while the teacher completes the register. On a Monday we join the rest of the school for assembly.

Literacy We have a 20 minute literacy lesson every morning focussing on reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. This is followed by a focussed activity related to the whole class lesson.

Reading We have a guided reading session every week. Emphasis on learning through range of strategies with strong emphasis on phonics. Use Letters and Sounds. Learn to recognise series of Common Exception Words, many of which cannot be sounded out phonically. Also look at context and other clues to assist in understanding text.

Reading in the classroom.

Mathematical Development We have a 20 minute maths lesson every morning focussing on counting, sorting, matching, patterns and problem solving. Children work with numbers, shape, space and measures. Children learn through stories, songs, games and imaginative play.

In the Class Children work in focussed groups everyday, sometimes of mixed ability and sometimes in ability. They have the opportunity throughout the day for teacher and child led activities. Children have access to indoor and outdoor activities all day.

Teacher Focussed Activity

Child initiated learning Children’s independent play is an important part of their development. This is where they can apply the skills they have been taught in a range of play based activities. Staff observe the children as they are engaged in these independent activities and use this information as part of their on going assessment.
