Transition into Year 1 Transition between Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum to National Curriculum Transition already begun (morning play, assemblies, story swaps, daily whole class writing, phonics and ‘whizzy maths’ lesson etc) ‘Slide in’ transition rather than ‘Stop / Start’ transition Continuing: exploring and learning, daily phonics lesson, Maths and English teaching Initially - whole class input, and one group working with teacher daily Developing - until all children work daily on lesson after whole class teaching Timescale – flexible, during the Autumn Term Rachel

National Curriculum Key Stage 1 (Years 1 and 2) Core subjects: English, Maths, Science Foundation subjects: Art and design, Computing, Design and technology, Languages (French), Geography, History, Music, Physical Education. Also statutory Religious Education Discrete English, Maths and Science Discrete Music, PE and French Art and design, computing, design and technology, Geography and History taught with close ‘topic’ links – subjects have heavier weighting in different topics Sam with support from Rachel and Nicky

Growth Mindset Those with growth mindset make better progress in learning Fixed or Growth mindset Fixed mindset – intelligence fixed (can’t be changed) Look clever at all costs It should come naturally Hide mistakes and deficiencies I can’t do it Growth mindset – ability can grow with practice Learn at all costs Work hard, effort is key Learn from mistakes and deficiencies to go forward with increased skill / knowledge I can’t do it YET Praise – mixed blessing Praise for the learning that has taken place, noticing progress Verbalise learning – HOW did you do it? Make unconscious learning conscious

Practicalities Uniform (school shoes please, no boots) Book bag (only books please, no water bottles in the bags) Homework: reading 5x per week Sharing (once every three weeks) more of a theme than Year R topic based work every term – topic jigsaw sound of the week Fruit and milk at playtime (optional milk from age 5) Water bottles Nicky

Summer learning To keep up skills over the summer Hampshire Library Service reading scheme – Discovery Centre Homework task – weekly ‘diary’ in any format you wish Talk about numbers, money, time and measures wherever you see them Junk modelling junk please! (clean only!) Ros

Reading Two parts Re-telling and talking about what you have read De-coding Reading 5 x per week at home Daily reading in class during phonics lessons Hearing stories, poetry and non-fiction with the teacher 1-1 with the class-teacher or TA every fortnight Guided Reading sessions 2x per week, once with class teacher and once with TA Teacher will judge when each child is ready for more challenge and will assess throughout the year.
