Lesson Objectives To be able to identify the discoveries that Galen made regarding Human anatomy To be able to identify where Galen was correct and where he was wrong about Human anatomy and give reasons for his mistakes To evaluate the significance of Galen’s contribution to medical understanding of anatomy To consider the legacy of Galen and evaluate whether his work was more of a help than a hindrance in the development of anatomical understanding

The pig squirmed on the table The pig squirmed on the table. Galen cut into its neck and found the nerves. The pig squealed. ‘Watch,’ said Galen to his audience. I will cut this nerve but the pig will keep on squealing.’ He cut. The pig kept squealing. Galen cut another nerve. Again the pig squealed. ‘Now, ‘ said Galen, ‘I will cut another nerve which controls the pig’s voice. It will not squeal. Galen cut the nerve. The room was silent.

How significant was Galen’s contribution to understanding of anatomy On your own copy of Galen’s diagram of human anatomy annotate what he said about it In one colour highlight the points he was right about In a different colour, highlight the points he was wrong about.

Watch the clip and add any extra points to your diagram

If Galen was wrong about so many elements of human anatomy, then does that mean that his contribution to medicine was not significant?

Can you date this picture? What does this suggest to you about Galen’s legacy?
