Year 2 National Curriculum Test Meeting Friday 10th February 2017 Natalie Tyndale Trainee Headteacher

Purpose for Meeting Update on national changes in Assessment arrangements for children at the end of Key Stage 1. Changed introduced in 2015/16

A New National Curriculum was introduced in 2014 As a result, the Standards and Testing Agency (STA) is changing the test so that they assess the new curriculum. Children starting Year 2 in September 2015 and beyond will take the new style tests for the first time in May 2016. This is what you need to know about what the tests involve.

These tests are known as SATs. What are SATs? Standard Assessment Tasks (SATs) Children will be taking part nationally Children who are working well below the national standard may not take part.

What are the National Expectations? This is the first year that the children will be tested on the 2014 New National Curriculum. Your child will be amongst the first pupils to take the new test. The new tests have be introduced in Key Stage 1 to reflect the changes to the national curriculum, which was introduced from September 2014. They will be given a ‘raw score’ and a ‘scaled score’ (scaled scores will be released in July 2017). This will tell whether the children are working at the national standard, above, working at a greater depth (mastery) or below.

What is a scaled score? It is planned that 100 will represent the ‘national standard’. Each child’s raw score will therefore be converted into a score on the scale either at, above or below 100. The scale will have a lower end point somewhere below 100 and an upper point above 100. A child who achieves the ‘national standard’ (a score of 100) will be judged to have demonstrated sufficient knowledge in the areas assessed by the test. In July 2017 for the 2nd publication of test results, each pupil will receive: A raw score (number of raw marks awarded) A scaled score in each tested subject Confirmation of whether or not they attained the ‘national standard

What is tested? At the end of Year 2, children will take SATs in:: Reading English grammar, punctuation and spelling Mathematics SATs have to be carried out during May but there are no set dates nationally – this will be a school decision

The papers: MATHEMATICS Paper 1: Arithmetic (15 mins) Paper 2: Mathematical Fluency, Problem-Solving and Reasoning, (35 mins) Children will not be able to use any tools such as calculators or number lines.

The papers: READING Paper 1: Selection of text, with scattered comprehension questions (15 mins) Paper 2: Reading booklet of a selection of passages, question booklet, (15 mins)

The papers: English: Grammar, Spelling and Punctuation Paper 1: Grammar and punctuation written task (20 mins) Paper 2: Grammar, Punctuation and Vocabulary Test (20 mins) Paper 3: 20 Word Spelling Test (15 mins)

Supporting pupils at school Practice SATs Papers/Mock SATs: Timed: Practice working to a set time Marks: Check what is expected of them 1, 2 or 3 marks Strategies: Move onto next question if stuck, Spend 5 minutes checking Reading timing (number of sections) Key vocabulary : Understanding and use key vocabulary

Supporting pupils at school Over half term, there will be an intensive revision programme of boosters for chosen children Arithmetic programme by practicing calculations every day Reading practice – reading quickly but so they understand the question Booster Groups + other intervention programmes

How can parents help at home Ensure children have a good breakfast in the morning to help them concentrate during the day Dedicate a quiet, comfortable place for children to study and practice strategies needed for the tests Support with Home Learning whenever possible.

How can parents help the week of the SATs? There are several practical things you can do to help your child with the SATs: Make sure your child is in school and is on time each day Make sure your child gets plenty of sleep up to and during the week of SATs Try to give your child the chance to get some exercise and fresh air after the school day has finished. Sample test papers can be downloaded using the following link: https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/national- curriculum-assessments-2016-sample-materials
