i wanna be yours by John Cooper Clarke Starter Which of the objects below might have something to do with a love poem? Explain why. The teddy bear is the most ‘romantic’ object here because they are cuddly and this one says ‘I love you’. The pink boat may also have some romantic associations because it may make you think of a romantic cruise. However in his poem John Cooper Clarke uses all these objects to demonstrate his love.

i wanna be yours by John Cooper Clarke Learning Objectives As we study this poem you will learn: the story of the poem be introduced to the terms, The Story of the Poem: Key Line: Structure: Complex Rhyme Scheme: Repetition: Rhythm: Enjambment: Tone: Imagery. how to read out the poem to the class in a group You will also complete some mini tasks and a quiz on the poem.

i wanna be yours by John Cooper Clarke Stanza by Stanza Most poems have an idea or ‘story’ that the poet wants to tell his reader. Identifying what the poem is about I call finding “The Story of the Poem”. Mini Task 1 To help you identify the ‘Story of the Poem’, briefly write down what you think is happening in each stanza of the poem. let me be your vacuum cleaner breathing in your dust let me be your ford cortina i will never rust if you like your coffee hot let me be your coffee pot you call the shots i wanna be yours let me be your raincoat for those frequent rainy days let me be your dreamboat when you wanna sail away let me be your teddy bear take me with you anywhere i don't care i wanna be yours let me be your electric meter i will not run out let me be the electric heater you get cold without let me be your setting lotion hold your hair with deep devotion deep as the deep atlantic ocean that's how deep is my emotion deep deep deep deep de deep deep i don't wanna be hers i wanna be yours

i wanna be yours by John Cooper Clarke Stanza by Stanza Most poems have an idea or ‘story’ that the poet wants to tell his reader. Identifying what the poem is about I call finding “The Story of the Poem”. Mini Task 1 To help you identify the ‘Story of the Poem’, briefly write down what you think is happening in each stanza of the poem. let me be your vacuum cleaner breathing in your dust let me be your ford cortina i will never rust if you like your coffee hot let me be your coffee pot you call the shots i wanna be yours Here the poet is trying to show his love that he deserves her affection and will even let her run the relationship. let me be your electric meter i will not run out let me be the electric heater you get cold without let me be your setting lotion hold your hair with deep devotion deep as the deep atlantic ocean that's how deep is my emotion deep deep deep deep de deep deep i don't wanna be hers i wanna be yours Here the poet is trying to show his lady the depth of his love, that he is now willing to be faithful and no longer wishes to be with someone else. let me be your raincoat for those frequent rainy days let me be your dreamboat when you wanna sail away let me be your teddy bear take me with you anywhere i don't care i wanna be yours Here the poet is trying to show his love that he wants to be with her all the time. He wants to be hers.

i wanna be yours by John Cooper Clarke Stanza by Stanza Most poems have an idea or ‘story’ that the poet wants to tell his reader. Identifying what the poem is about I call finding “The Story of the Poem”. Mini Task 2 Identify what you think is one KEY LINE from each stanza and say why you think the line is important. let me be your vacuum cleaner breathing in your dust let me be your ford cortina i will never rust if you like your coffee hot let me be your coffee pot you call the shots i wanna be yours let me be your raincoat for those frequent rainy days let me be your dreamboat when you wanna sail away let me be your teddy bear take me with you anywhere i don't care i wanna be yours let me be your electric meter i will not run out let me be the electric heater you get cold without let me be your setting lotion hold your hair with deep devotion deep as the deep atlantic ocean that's how deep is my emotion deep deep deep deep de deep deep i don't wanna be hers i wanna be yours

i wanna be yours by John Cooper Clarke Stanza by Stanza Most poems have an idea or ‘story’ that the poet wants to tell his reader. Identifying what the poem is about I call finding “The Story of the Poem”. Mini Task 2 Identify what you think is one KEY LINE from each stanza and say why you think the line is important. For me the key lines are: let me be your vacuum cleaner breathing in your dust let me be your ford cortina i will never rust if you like your coffee hot let me be your coffee pot you call the shots i wanna be yours let me be your raincoat for those frequent rainy days let me be your dreamboat when you wanna sail away let me be your teddy bear take me with you anywhere i don't care i wanna be yours Here the poet shows he is prepared to let his lady take control of the relationship. let me be your electric meter i will not run out let me be the electric heater you get cold without let me be your setting lotion hold your hair with deep devotion deep as the deep atlantic ocean that's how deep is my emotion deep deep deep deep de deep deep i don't wanna be hers i wanna be yours Here we get to the main point of the poem, BETRAYAL. The poet no longer wants to be with someone else, but with this particular lady. Here the poet shows he is prepared to stick by his lady and go anywhere with her.

i wanna be yours by John Cooper Clarke Mini Task 3 Now in your own words write down what you think is ‘the story of the poem’?

Mini Task 3 - The story of the Poem i wanna be yours by John Cooper Clarke Mini Task 3 - The story of the Poem This is essentially a love poem and in the poem the poet is trying to prove to his lady-love how useful he is and how much he loves her. He is even prepared to let her take the lead in running the relationship. At the end of the poem he accepts he has made a mistake by loving another and he declares that he does not wish to be with the other woman, he wants her. So the poet is either in a relationship which he wants to leave for his new love; or he has cheated on his true love and now wishes to go back to her. So it is a poem about betrayal as well as being a love poem.

i wanna be yours by John Cooper Clarke Oral Task In your group practice reading out your section of the poem. You can allocate the words/lines any way that you want, but everyone must be involved and you must all say at least one line together. (You cannot all read all of it together!)

i wanna be yours by John Cooper Clarke The Structure Of The Poem Stanzas To begin to determine how is the poem structured and composed start with stanzas. Mini Task 4a Copy down this description of stanzas. There are 3 stanzas in this poem. let me be your vacuum cleaner breathing in your dust let me be your ford cortina i will never rust if you like your coffee hot let me be your coffee pot you call the shots i wanna be yours let me be your raincoat for those frequent rainy days let me be your dreamboat when you wanna sail away let me be your teddy bear take me with you anywhere i don't care i wanna be yours let me be your electric meter i will not run out let me be the electric heater you get cold without let me be your setting lotion hold your hair with deep devotion deep as the deep atlantic ocean that's how deep is my emotion deep deep deep deep de deep deep i don't wanna be hers i wanna be yours

i wanna be yours by John Cooper Clarke The Structure Of The Poem Stanza Lines Next determine how many lines in each stanza. Copy down this description of lines. Mini Task 4b Copy down this description of Stanza Lines. In Stanza 1 & 2 there are 8 lines. Stanza 3 contains 13 lines. let me be your vacuum cleaner breathing in your dust let me be your ford cortina i will never rust if you like your coffee hot let me be your coffee pot you call the shots i wanna be yours let me be your raincoat for those frequent rainy days let me be your dreamboat when you wanna sail away let me be your teddy bear take me with you anywhere i don't care i wanna be yours let me be your electric meter i will not run out let me be the electric heater you get cold without let me be your setting lotion hold your hair with deep devotion deep as the deep atlantic ocean that's how deep is my emotion deep deep deep deep de deep deep i don't wanna be hers i wanna be yours

i wanna be yours by John Cooper Clarke The Structure Of The Poem Line Length Next determine line length in each stanza. Remember you do this by counting the syllables in each line. Mini Task 4c Count the line length on the section you have been given. let me be your vacuum cleaner breathing in your dust let me be your ford cortina i will never rust if you like your coffee hot let me be your coffee pot you call the shots i wanna be yours let me be your raincoat for those frequent rainy days let me be your dreamboat when you wanna sail away let me be your teddy bear take me with you anywhere i don't care i wanna be yours let me be your electric meter i will not run out let me be the electric heater you get cold without let me be your setting lotion hold your hair with deep devotion deep as the deep atlantic ocean that's how deep is my emotion deep deep deep deep de deep deep i don't wanna be hers i wanna be yours

i wanna be yours by John Cooper Clarke The Structure Of The Poem Line Length Here is the line length for each stanza. Mini Task 4c Count the line length on the section you have been given. i wanna be yours by John Cooper Clarke The Structure Of The Poem Rhyme Scheme You can describe a Rhyme Scheme in words or by using letters. Mini Task 5 Method 1: Using words write down the rhyme scheme for Stanza 1. (Note: Stanza 2 is the same as Stanza 1.) let me be your vacuum cleaner breathing in your dust let me be your ford cortina i will never rust if you like your coffee hot let me be your coffee pot you call the shots i wanna be yours let me be your raincoat for those frequent rainy days let me be your dreamboat when you wanna sail away let me be your teddy bear take me with you anywhere i don't care i wanna be yours let me be your electric meter i will not run out let me be the electric heater you get cold without let me be your setting lotion hold your hair with deep devotion deep as the deep atlantic ocean that's how deep is my emotion deep deep deep deep de deep deep i don't wanna be hers i wanna be yours

i wanna be yours by John Cooper Clarke The Structure Of The Poem Rhyme Scheme Mini Task 5 Method 1: Using words write down the rhyme scheme for Stanza 1. Mini Task 6 In words now write down the rhyme scheme for Stanza 3. let me be your vacuum cleaner breathing in your dust let me be your ford cortina i will never rust if you like your coffee hot let me be your coffee pot you call the shots i wanna be yours let me be your raincoat for those frequent rainy days let me be your dreamboat when you wanna sail away let me be your teddy bear take me with you anywhere i don't care i wanna be yours Stanza 1 & 2 have two alternate rhyming couplets and a rhyming triplet. let me be your electric meter i will not run out let me be the electric heater you get cold without let me be your setting lotion hold your hair with deep devotion deep as the deep atlantic ocean that's how deep is my emotion deep deep deep deep de deep deep i don't wanna be hers i wanna be yours

i wanna be yours by John Cooper Clarke The Structure Of The Poem Rhyme Scheme. You can do this by describing the rhyme scheme in words or by using letters. Mini Task 6 In words now write down the rhyme scheme for Stanza 3. let me be your vacuum cleaner breathing in your dust let me be your ford cortina i will never rust if you like your coffee hot let me be your coffee pot you call the shots i wanna be yours let me be your raincoat for those frequent rainy days let me be your dreamboat when you wanna sail away let me be your teddy bear take me with you anywhere i don't care i wanna be yours let me be your electric meter i will not run out let me be the electric heater you get cold without let me be your setting lotion hold your hair with deep devotion deep as the deep atlantic ocean that's how deep is my emotion deep deep deep deep de deep deep i don't wanna be hers i wanna be yours The final stanza starts with alternate rhyming couplets but then has some unrhymed lines between the quartet. The stanza ends with a rhyming couplet.

i wanna be yours by John Cooper Clarke The Structure Of The Poem Rhyme Scheme. As you can see the rhyme scheme for this poem is very irregular. This makes it a COMPLEX RHYME SCHEME. Using words to describe a Complex rhyme Scheme is often complicated so it is easier to use letters to describe the rhyme scheme. let me be your vacuum cleaner breathing in your dust let me be your ford cortina i will never rust if you like your coffee hot let me be your coffee pot you call the shots i wanna be yours let me be your raincoat for those frequent rainy days let me be your dreamboat when you wanna sail away let me be your teddy bear take me with you anywhere i don't care i wanna be yours Stanza 1 & 2 have two alternate rhyming couplets and a rhyming triplet. let me be your electric meter i will not run out let me be the electric heater you get cold without let me be your setting lotion hold your hair with deep devotion deep as the deep atlantic ocean that's how deep is my emotion deep deep deep deep de deep deep i don't wanna be hers i wanna be yours The final stanza starts with alternate rhyming couplets but then has some unrhymed lines between the quartet. The stanza ends with a rhyming couplet.

i wanna be yours by John Cooper Clarke The Structure Of The Poem Method 2: Using letters to describe a rhyme scheme. For Stanza 1 this would be: Mini Task 7a Copy down the letter used to show the rhyme scheme for Stanza 1. let me be your vacuum cleaner -a breathing in your dust -b let me be your ford cortina -a i will never rust -b if you like your coffee hot -c let me be your coffee pot -c you call the shots -c i wanna be yours let me be your raincoat for those frequent rainy days let me be your dreamboat when you wanna sail away let me be your teddy bear take me with you anywhere i don't care i wanna be yours Stanza 1 & 2 have two alternate rhyming couplets and a rhyming triplet. let me be your electric meter i will not run out let me be the electric heater you get cold without let me be your setting lotion hold your hair with deep devotion deep as the deep atlantic ocean that's how deep is my emotion deep deep deep deep de deep deep i don't wanna be hers i wanna be yours

i wanna be yours by John Cooper Clarke The Structure Of The Poem Mini Task 7b Now, starting with the letter ‘d’ for Stanza 2 and ‘g’ for Stanza 3, put letters in for the rest of the poem. Use an underscore _ to show an unrhymed line. let me be your vacuum cleaner -a breathing in your dust -b let me be your ford cortina -a i will never rust -b if you like your coffee hot -c let me be your coffee pot -c you call the shots -c i wanna be yours _ let me be your raincoat for those frequent rainy days let me be your dreamboat when you wanna sail away let me be your teddy bear take me with you anywhere i don't care i wanna be yours Stanza 1 & 2 have two alternate rhyming couplets and a rhyming triplet. let me be your electric meter i will not run out let me be the electric heater you get cold without let me be your setting lotion hold your hair with deep devotion deep as the deep atlantic ocean that's how deep is my emotion deep deep deep deep de deep deep i don't wanna be hers i wanna be yours

i wanna be yours by John Cooper Clarke The Structure Of The Poem Mini Task 7b Now, starting with the letter ‘d’ for Stanza 2 and ‘g’ for Stanza 3, put letters in for the rest of the poem. Use an underscore _ to show an unrhymed line. The final stanza starts with alternate rhyming couplets but then has some unrhymed lines between the quartet. The stanza ends with a rhyming couplet. let me be your vacuum cleaner -a breathing in your dust -b let me be your ford cortina -a i will never rust -b if you like your coffee hot -c let me be your coffee pot -c you call the shots -c i wanna be yours _ let me be your raincoat -d for those frequent rainy days -e let me be your dreamboat -d when you wanna sail away -e let me be your teddy bear -f take me with you anywhere -f i don't care -f i wanna be yours _ Stanza 1 & 2 have two alternate rhyming couplets and a rhyming triplet. The rhyme description for Stanza 2 starts with ‘d’ as we used ‘a, b &c’ for Stanza 1. let me be your electric meter -g i will not run out -h let me be the electric heater -g you get cold without -h let me be your setting lotion -i hold your hair _ with deep devotion -i deep as the deep _ atlantic ocean - i that's how deep is my emotion - i deep deep deep deep de deep deep _ i don't wanna be hers - j i wanna be yours - j

i wanna be yours by John Cooper Clarke The Structure Of The Poem So the rhyme scheme for the poem using letters is: a b a b c c c _ : d e d e f f f _ : g h g h i _ i _ i i _ j j Mini Task 7c: Copy down the letter method to show the rhyme scheme for the poem. Use the space above the Mini Task 8 box. The final stanza starts with alternate rhyming couplets but then has some unrhymed lines between the quartet. i wanna be yours by John Cooper Clarke Key Feature Most poems will have a Key Feature that is central to expressing the point the poet wants to make. In many poems IMAGERY is a Key Feature but in this poem John Cooper Clarke has also used REPETITION. Mini Task 9 There are over one million words in the English language. There are rarely more than a few hundred words in a poem. So, given that a good poet is a master of the English Language, what are the three reasons why a poet might want to use repetition in any poem they write?

i wanna be yours by John Cooper Clarke Key Feature - Repetition Mini Task 9 There are over one million words in the English language. There are never more than a few dozen or a few hundred words in a poem. So, given that a good poet is a master of the English Language, why might a poet want to use repetition in any poem they write? In general a poet uses REPETITION for rhythmic purposes or to emphasize the point they are trying to make, or for both of these reasons. So the answer is, RHYTHM, EMPHASIS or BOTH.

i wanna be yours by John Cooper Clarke Key Feature - Repetition Mini Task 10 There are 139 words in this poem and 81 of them are repetitions – more than half the poem! So why does John Cooper Clarke use REPETITION in i wanna be yours?

i wanna be yours by John Cooper Clarke Key Feature – Repetition Mini Task 9 In i wanna be yours John Cooper Clarke uses repetition both for rhythmic purposes and to emphasize the point he is trying to make. Mini Task 10 Copy out the explanation below. let me be your vacuum cleaner breathing in your dust let me be your ford cortina i will never rust if you like your coffee hot let me be your coffee pot you call the shots i wanna be yours In the opening stanza the poet repeats ‘let me be’ at the start of the stanza and then ’your coffee’ and ‘yours’. This all helps establish the rhythm or ‘beat’ of the poem ex: dum dum dum dee dum dum dum dum-dum dum dum dum [The rhythm is further enhanced by the rhyme pattern in the poem.]

i wanna be yours by John Cooper Clarke Key Feature – Repetition Mini Task 11 - Copy out the explanation below. The other purpose of the repetitions is to emphasize how much the poet wants this lady, how useful he can be and how deep is his love. For example each stanza starts with ‘let me be’ and ends with ‘I wanna be yours’ and in the ‘Atlantic Ocean’ section he tries to prove the depth of his love for her. let me be your vacuum cleaner breathing in your dust let me be your ford cortina i will never rust if you like your coffee hot let me be your coffee pot you call the shots i wanna be yours let me be your raincoat for those frequent rainy days let me be your dreamboat when you wanna sail away let me be your teddy bear take me with you anywhere i don't care i wanna be yours let me be your electric meter i will not run out let me be the electric heater you get cold without let me be your setting lotion hold your hair with deep devotion deep as the deep atlantic ocean that's how deep is my emotion deep deep deep deep de deep deep i don't wanna be hers i wanna be yours

i wanna be yours by John Cooper Clarke Poetic Devices - Enjambment Mini Task 12 Copy out the definition of Enjambment. Enjambment is a French word that means to step across or step over. In poetry this means the sense in one line or stanza runs on to the next line or the next stanza. Punctuation usually stops this flow. Unfortunately there is no punctuation in i wanna be yours to help to give you clues to the points at which you need to pause for breath or to read on where ENJAMBMENT is present. Mini Task 13 - Enjambment Now put in a full stop or an arrow  at the end of each line in the whole poem to mark where you think there is punctuation or Enjambment.

i wanna be yours by John Cooper Clarke Mini Task 13 – Punctuation & Enjambment let me be your vacuum cleaner  breathing in your dust. let me be your ford cortina  i will never rust. if you like your coffee hot  let me be your coffee pot. you call the shots. i wanna be yours . let me be your raincoat  for those frequent rainy days. let me be your dreamboat  when you wanna sail away. let me be your teddy bear  take me with you anywhere. i don't care. i wanna be yours . let me be your electric meter  i will not run out. let me be the electric heater  you get cold without. let me be your setting lotion  hold your hair  with deep devotion, deep as the deep  atlantic ocean  that's how deep is my emotion. deep deep deep deep de deep deep. i don't wanna be hers. i wanna be yours. To fully understand the rhythms of this poem you must understand how the 12 enjambments help the sense in the poem flow from one line to the next. Enjambment – no punctuation to help with

The Structure of the Poem Mini Task 14 - Tone i wanna be yours by John Cooper Clarke The Structure of the Poem Mini Task 14 - Tone Write down what you think the two TONES of the poem are.

i wanna be yours by John Cooper Clarke The Structure Of The Poem Mini Task 14 - Tone 1: Funny & 2: Serious. The principal tone of the poem is very ‘light’ or funny because of the strange selection of objects that John Cooper Clarke uses to demonstrate his love. However under the surface there is a darker and more serious side to poem as the poem is also about betrayal because the next to last line says “i don’t want t be hers”. So the poet is either in a relationship with another woman and wants to ‘dump’ her to go with the woman he is talking to in the poem, or at some point in the past he was with the woman he talks to and has left her to go with this other woman. He now regrets this betrayal and wants to return to his original love.

i wanna be yours by John Cooper Clarke The Structure Of The Poem - Imagery Imagery: words and phrases that are used in literature to create clear pictures or images in our minds. The poem uses a strange selection of objects as proof of love. Some objects are useful and others intimate or romantic. Mini Task 15: Place the objects mentioned in the poem into one of the two columns in the table in your Mini-Task Booklet. Stanza 1 vacuum cleaner ford cortina coffee pot. Stanza 2 raincoat dreamboat teddy bear Stanza 3 electric meter electric heater setting lotion atlantic ocean Useful Objects Intimate/Romantic Objects

i wanna be yours by John Cooper Clarke The Structure Of The Poem - Imagery MINI TASK 15 Useful Objects Intimate/Romantic Objects Vacuum Cleaner Raincoat Ford Cortina Dreamboat Coffee Pot Teddy Bear Electric Meter Setting Lotion Electric Heater Atlantic Ocean Mini Task 16 What do you notice about the list you have drawn up?

i wanna be yours by John Cooper Clarke The Structure Of The Poem - Imagery MINI TASK 16 Useful Objects Intimate/Romantic Objects Vacuum Cleaner Raincoat Ford Cortina Dreamboat Coffee Pot Teddy Bear Electric Meter Setting Lotion Electric Heater Atlantic Ocean You should have noticed that all the objects in the first stanza are useful, the objects in the second stanza are intimate or romantic and the third stanza is a mix of both. The Atlantic Ocean is placed as a romantic object as it is used to prove the depth of the poet’s love.

i wanna be yours by John Cooper Clarke Writing Task Imagine you are the girl that the poet is talking to in this poem, or you are a boy, and a girl has said these things to you. i wanna be yours by John Cooper Clarke Writing Task I Don’t Wanna Be Yours I don’t wanna be your vacuum cleaner And I don’t care about your dust. I never liked that Ford Cortina, It was always full of rust If I want a coffee hot, I get a Starbucks coffee pot. It’ll probably get me shot, But, I don’t wanna be yours I wouldn’t let you near my raincoat, Even on a rainy day. You’re certainly no dreamboat, Why don’t you just go away. You’ll never be my teddy bear, I’ll never take you anywhere I just don't care. I don’t wanna be yours You’re not going near my electric meter, I don’t care if it runs out. Don’t need you to be my electric heater, even if it gives me gout. And keep yer hands off me setting lotion, I hold my hair with deep devotion. Deep as the deep Atlantic ocean that's how deep is my emotion. Deep deep deep deep de deep deep. I don't wanna be yours, Johnny, don’t wanna be yours Mr Tim
