Printmaking with fruit

Objective The aim in this workshop is to create screen prints using fresh and dried fruit. It will assist children in understanding the screen printing and stamping processes as well as the understanding that anything can be used to create art. Even old fruit!

Process The most versatile fruit to use for this exercise is oranges and apples, however fruit such as pears and bananas can be used to create soft lines. Using some dried and some fresh fruit, a light layer of acrylic paint will be added to the surface of the fruit, in which creating a stamp for the students to use in as a tool of creative practice.

Tools Dried fruit Acrylic paint (think pop art colors to mirror Andy Warhol's process) Tubs to hold paint Black or white card A wash bucket

Artist link Andy Warhol is a renowned print making artist, pushing the boundaries of print making to make inanimate objects such as soup cans an iconic symbol. Warhol often used screen printing boards, creating images of famous induvial such as Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley and in this image created an iconic symbol from a banana.

Follow up Layers can be added to this process, allow children to draw with paint or ink pots once the original layer has dried, this will create a more dynamic process. Ensure the work is then hung or framed, after all these are art works.
