How are Year Six Children Assessed? S.A.T.s One week of testing 14th – 18th May 1 Reading, 2 Writing & 1 Spelling 2 Maths papers & 1 Mental arithmetic paper Teacher Assessment Assessed over the year Formal & Informal assessments Literacy: Speaking & Listening, Reading and Writing Numeracy

English Reading Comprehension 15 minutes’ reading of a booklet 45 minutes to answer questions Mix of multi-choice, short and long answers Writing 2 writing tasks: one long, one short Marked on style, content, punctuation grammar and handwriting Separate spelling test
How can Parents help? English Encourage a range of reading genres, including fiction, non-fiction, newspaper reports, letters, poems and lists. Read books, newspapers, magazines or from the internet. Encourage a range of writing, similar to above. Write shopping lists, write formal and informal letters, write explanations and instructions. Write directions for a journey. Continue to support spelling work, filling in missing words as well as single words. ‘Spotting the mistake’ activities. Making word lists through spelling patterns. Using a dictionary and thesaurus.
Numeracy Written Papers Paper A & B Paper B – use of a calculator allowed 45 minutes to answer questions Questions increase in difficulty More using & applying (problem solving and ‘real life’) questions Mental Arithmetic Played on a CD 20 questions Time limits of 5, 10 and 15 seconds Only time for J.I.D!
How can Parents help? Numeracy Encourage the use of everyday Maths. Develop mental strategies for solving problems. Look at time, money, weight, fractions, decimals and percentages. Continue to learn times tables. Use them to solve harder questions. Eg. Use 8x6=48 to solve 80x6= or 16x6= To help children develop the skill of understanding when a written calculation is needed, instead of a mental calculation. Getting children to check answers. Use a calculator to solve problems. Understand that a calculator does not show money correctly. Eg. 3.5 = £3.50

How can Parents help? General Avoid overload and panic! Encourage and support children with: Home learning Bitesize and Woodlands Junior School Materials CGP Revision books In test week: Plenty of sleep! A good start to the day including breakfast and a drink. R & R in-between!
