November 28, 2011 Aim: How did the Federal Government encourage westward movement? DO RIGHT NOW: Take out your binder and copy AIM & DATE.

Unit 5: Westward Movement Assessment at the end of this unit will be a DBQ Essay. You will be creating a question for your DBQ Essay to answer. Choose at least 4 documents to support your argument.

Imagine you are a member of the Federal Government, what issues are you going to encounter with this newly acquired land?

Aim: How did the Federal Government encourage westward movement? SOAP the Document: SUBJECT  What is the main topic of the document? OBJECTIVE  Why was this document written? Purpose? AUDIENCE  Who was this written for? PERSPECTIVE Who wrote this document? Carefully read and annotate for SOAP in the Homestead Act and Pacific Railway Act.

Aim: How did the Federal Government encourage westward movement? HOMESTEAD ACT (1862) gave 160 acres of land to settlers 21 or older to live on the land for 5 years and improve the land. PACIFIC RAILWAY ACT (1862)  promoted the construction of the transcontinental railroad by Federal Government giving land and loaning money to railroad companies.

Aim: How did the Federal Government encourage westward movement? Pick one of the following roles: Native American Poor white settler Freed Slave Railroad Company Owner Write a letter from the perspective from someone above to the Federal Government. EXPLAIN whether you SUPPORT or OPPOSE the Homestead Act & Pacific Railway Act. DESCRIBE any problems/conflicts you might encounter because of these acts. BE DETAILED, CLEAR and SPECIFIC.
