Financial Aid 101 for Student Teaching Financial Aid & Scholarships

State Requirements for Student Teaching 6 hours of credit for student teaching 6 hours = half-time enrollment status Half-time enrollment status=minimum for financial aid

Applying for Financial Aid Fill out the FAFSA every year January 1st-March 15th www.fafsa.ed.gov State on FAFSA half-time enrollment If FAFSA is submitted with different status, come by office to fill out an Enrollment Change Form

Grants Half-time enrollment results in loss of Texas Excellence Grant (TEXAS) Students are required to be enrolled in nine hours to continue receiving grant Other grants will be pro-rated and pay out at half the total amount If enrolled ¾ time (9-11 hours) grants will prorate to 75% of total amount

Scholarships You’ll Need Letter from Academic Advisor detailing Student Teaching requirements Turn in letters to awarding source -General Scholarships-Office of Student Financial Aid and Enrollment Services -College or Department -Outside Donors Donors Most are understanding about half-time status Donors choose to pay out full or pro-rated the award

Loans Loans must be pro-rated at 25% of the annual award 6 hours divided by 24 hours = 25% 24 hours = full-time academic load based on annual Cost of Attendance Education Loan Forgiveness Program Read the Education Loan Forgiveness Program fact sheet distributed by the Office of Student Teaching Submit application to Janet Scott ASAP

Responsible Borrowing Reduce Amount Borrowed Exhaust Federal Aid First Borrow Only What You Need Loan Portfolio Reduce the amount of loan money needed Submit FAFSA early  by March 15th increases opportunity for GRANT funding! Search and apply for scholarships, fellowships, etc. Exhaust Federal Aid first Federal Subsidized / Unsubsidized Stafford Loans Federal Parent PLUS Borrow only what you need Keep a loan portfolio Types of loans borrowed, and from what lender Cost of loans (principal, interest, and frequency of capitalization)

Loss of Income If you decide not to work while Student Teaching, fill out the Loss of Income Form Financial Aid will compare income from last year with the current aid year !

Satisfactory Academic Progress GPA Maintain a 2.0 cumulative GPA Course Completion 67% completion rate of attempted hours Maximum hours Maximum hours attempted must not exceed 150% of attempted hours 120 hours x 1.5 = 180! The ability to obtain Financial Aid is great, but it’s not an entitlement. To keep aid, you must meet SAP.
