“COMMUNICATING AS ONE” Communication Strategy for the United Nations in Mozambique 12 May 2007

Vision The Communication Strategy aims to support the vision of a unified United Nations presence in Mozambique which acts, speaks and delivers as one.

Organizations that comprise the UN System in Mozambique to work together strategically The breadth and diversity of the UN system is also a weakness, because it’s often difficult for these very different organizations to plan and work together strategically. Some donors still see the UN’s field operations as too cumbersome and plagued by duplication in programming. Developing country governments, particularly small ones, often find dealing with the UN incurs heavy transaction costs. Cooperation is hindered by competition for funding, governance bodies that set divergent priorities and different business practices. Even when mandates intersect, UN organizations have tended to operate alone with little synergyor coordination.

Context Communication Group strengthens inter-agency cooperation on communication by: Providing the UNCT with support in communication Identifying new and creative ways to show how UN programmes are delivering results Promoting a coherent image of the United Nations

Main Objectives Advocate for poverty reduction measures through the achievement of the MDG and other internationally-agreed development objectives. Raise awareness about Mozambique’s socio-economic development and key development issues, through evidence-based information. Promote the work of the UN and its positive impact on the overall development process. Support resource mobilization efforts through the dissemination of information that demonstrates how we achieve better results by delivering as one. Articulate the UN Reform process of a unified UN to external and internal audiences

How we Communicate Issue joint press releases on UN priority issues Calendar of media and public events Field missions for media Press Conferences whenever necessary Radio and TV programmes Common observances of special occasions Assist in production and dissemination of reports Produce a joint UN calendar and greeting card Video and documentary production Electronic Newsletter UNCT website www.unmozambique.org
