This new route brought Portugal wealth.

VASCO DA GAMA

CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS -King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella -Columbus believed the Asian trade routes would be reached easiest by sailing West instead of East. -Believing they reached the Indies, Columbus’ men called the Natives “Indians.” -Made four trips in ten years to the New World.

CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS

MAGELLAN -Sailed on behalf of Spain. -Sailed West looking for a strait or quick way to get to Asia (through South America). -Continued to sail to Asia. Died in a conflict with local chiefs in 1520. -In 1522, one of the original boats made it back to Europe. The 18 crew members were the first to travel around the world.

FERDINAND MAGELLAN

CABOT -Sailed to modern-day Canada, believed he was in Northeast Asia. -Named many coastlines and islands on behalf of England. -Claimed the region for England.

DRAKE -Sailed around the world on behalf of England. Claimed a part of what is now California. -His men started raiding Spanish ports first created by Magellan. War ensued between Spain and England. -Spanish Armada 1588-started a new shift in global power to the British.

Line of Demarcation Prior to 1493, Spain and Portugal were the two most powerful countries in the world. They feared the other would take their new terrorities. Pope stepped in and drew a line on the globe. Any territory EAST of the line was controlled by Portugal. Any territory WEST was controlled by Spain. http://www.kidspast.com/world-history/0314-line-of-demarcation.php
