International Comenius & eTwinning Conference, Prague 30.09-1.10.2010 eTwinning and Comenius projects in Collège les Eyquems Merignac (France) Gimnazjum im. Jana Pawła II Krempachy (Poland) International Comenius & eTwinning Conference, Prague 30.09-1.10.2010

Ideas for a school 2007/08 « Statistics and you » Scuola Media Statale « L.Sinisgalli » Potenza (Italy) I.E.S. « Campos de San Roque » Valverde de Leganes (Spain) A new idea for 2008/09: The Earth as a mathematical solid, maps, distances, coordinates, GPS, travelling salesman problem…

International Comenius & eTwinning Conference, Prague 30.09-1.10.2010 Schools Gimnazjum im. Jana Pawła II Krempachy 325 students from 8 villages. Students live in a rural area. Collège les Eyquems Merignac 450 students. Although Merignac is a suburb of Bordeaux, it is quite a big city. I.E.S. Campos de San Roque Valverde de Leganés Over 300 students. The closest big city is Badajoz and the school is near Portugal. International Comenius & eTwinning Conference, Prague 30.09-1.10.2010

Maths and Earth All our activities in the project were aiming at showing how Mathematic is useful in science and exploration of the Earth. 2008/2009

Aims 1. Using Maths by solving problems Our 1st objective was to make students see the importance of Math to solve problems Our starting point was to ask students to choose twelve interesting places in Europe: our 3 schools of course + 9 places on the Unesco Heritage List. Then we set their coordinates in 3 dimensions. A map contest was organised among the students, the winner got a parcel full of gifts.

Calculating distances After analysing the shape of the  Earth, students had to convert coordinates into Cartesien system with the help of the freeware program  called Apsalin. Then they calculated the distances between the 12 points.

the shortest line joining the points Then, they found the shortest line joining the points (it is called the Travelling salesman problem). They also looked for the number of possible routes. Meanwhile the Spanish students were calculating the real cost of such an interesting trip... Solving the Travelling Salesman Problem

Solving the Four Colour Theorem Constructions and drawings They did geometrical constructions using programs like Geogebra, or Wiris, Students also discovered with surprise that only 4 colour are necessary to colour any map… It is the famous 4 colour theorem. Solving the Four Colour Theorem

Aims 2. Using ICT and new technologies Our 2nd objective in the project was to develop the use of ICT and new technologies in teaching students and teachers used many programs for communication and research. Also some specific programs, drawing and mathematical programs

Aims 3. Implementing connections between Maths, other subjects and common life The third objective was to create connections between the subjects. The best example was the Eratosthene experience. By measuring shadows in different places of Europe at the same time, students could calculate the radius of the Earth quite precisely. Measuring a shadow to calculate the radius of the Earth

Aims 4. Knowing European countries and their culture better Choice of places in the Unesco Heritage list Discussing on the social network Parcels Christmas tasks Getting to know Europe better was also an important objective of Maths and Earth. Choosing among the Unesco Heritage List allowed students to discover places they didn’t know before. On the social network, each student described himself and his way of living, so that all the other students got to know him better; Many parcels with traditional gifts (sweets, books etc) were sent, and a presentation with photos of the Christmas traditions in the 3 countries was decided.

Aims 5. Enhancing social and intercultural skills Working in groups, communication Taking initiatives, decisions Breaking stereotypes Public presentations Trips The last objective was to develop social and intercultural skills. By working together and taking effective decisions, students increased their self confidence and ability to cooperate. Of course many clichés were broken (all know that French eat frogs, garlick and baguet at breakfast…) In France and Poland, public presentations were done and a trip connected with the project was organised.

International Comenius & eTwinning Conference, Prague 30.09-1.10.2010 New ideas in 2008/09 Let’s do more ! Let’s extend our aims and activities ! Let’s do a Comenius project ! International Comenius & eTwinning Conference, Prague 30.09-1.10.2010

International Comenius & eTwinning Conference, Prague 30.09-1.10.2010 Problems and risks Not much time – 2 months Big responsibilty (money, mobilities) Precised plan and a description of the project Long lasting – 2 years No changes Not all get grant International Comenius & eTwinning Conference, Prague 30.09-1.10.2010

Advantages of Comenius project Visits in partner schools Students and teachers can work face to face More teachers are involved Better knowing a partner country Money for project activities International Comenius & eTwinning Conference, Prague 30.09-1.10.2010

School Maths In Learning English Topic ? Joining Maths & English New methods and tools in teaching Social skills European dimention S.M.I.L.E. School Maths In Learning English International Comenius & eTwinning Conference, Prague 30.09-1.10.2010

School Maths In Learning English Bilateral Comenius project S.M.I.L.E. School Maths In Learning English As a bilateral project, only 2 schools are involved : the Polish and French ones. Bilateral Comenius project 2009-2011

Aims Better interest in learning foreign languages and Mathematics Modern technologies in learning Social and intercultural skills including European dimension Our main objectives, like in Math and Earths, was 1st, to increase students’ interest in math and foreign languages, Then, to develop the use of ICT in teaching, and at last, to enhance the social and intercultural skills among students and teachers.

Activities A better interest in learning foreign languages and Mathematics Interdisciplinarity Problems connected to real life Bases in partner’s language (30 hours) Maths dictionary on-line Different methods of evaluation To achieve the 1st objective, we planned : Many lessons that involved 2 or more subjects at the same time (for instance, so we did math, geography, physics, biology and english). We tried to focus on everyday life situations In parallel, all french students have learnt the basics of polish, and similarly, polish students have learnt the basics of french A french-english-polish math dictionnary will be published on line We will also think and experience new methods of evaluation.

Activities Modern technologies in learning Website , Social network, Blogs http://www.exemple-site.fr/smile/ Programs and interactive boards GPS, camera, iPods Communication tools (e-mail, videoconference, chats) Presentations, films, CD, DVD The 2nd objective will be achieved by continuously using ICT : First : A website dedicated to the project , a social network and 2 blogs have been created and used. Then, we have been using specific programs and interactive boards in our lessons, and also modern tools such as GPS, camera and iPods . We tend to communicate essentially through email, chats or videoconferences Finally, we tried to disseminate the activities in the project through different ways such as : powerpoint presentations, films, CD, DVD etc…

Activities Social and intercultural skills Comparing countries, regions, schools Cultural events More involvement/decisions for students Developing social and intercultural skills (including European citizenship) is an important part of the project. To do so, many activities have aimed at comparing our countries, regions, schools, and ways of living. Cultural events (like special days or exhibitions) have allowed students to take a greater part in the project and have developed their self confidence and team spirit

How to use 24 days of meetings? Mobilities How to use 24 days of meetings? Lessons with Polish and French students Workshops and learning ‘manual’ skills Social and intercultural skills Visiting places of interests Listening and speaking Poland: 6-17.05.2010 France: 7-18.10.2010
