Proopiomelanocortin (POMC) processing Proopiomelanocortin (POMC) processing. Corticotropin-releasing hormone stimulates the production, release, and processing of POMC, a preprohormone synthesized in the anterior pituitary. POMC is post-translationally cleaved to adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH); β-endorphin, an endogenous opioid peptide; and α-, β-, and γ-melanocyte-stimulating hormones (MSHs). The cellular effects of these peptides are mediated via melanocortin (ACTH and MSH) or opiate (β-endorphin) receptors. LPH, β-lipotropin. Source: Chapter 3.
