Timothy, young Church leaders and all believers everywhere.  Audience: Timothy, young Church leaders and all believers everywhere.

Date Written:  Approximately A. D. 64, from Rome or Macedonia (possibly Philippi), probably just prior to Paul’s imprisonment in Rome.

Setting:  Timothy was one of Paul’s closest companions. Paul had sent Timothy to the Church at Ephesus to encounter false teaching that had arisen there. 1 Timothy 1:3-4 Timothy probably served as a leader at the Church of Ephesus. Paul hoped to visit Timothy, but in the meantime, he wrote this letter to give Timothy practical advice about this ministry.

1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ, by the commandment of God our Savior and the Lord Jesus Christ, our hope,  

1 Corinthians 9:1-3 1 I am an apostle, God's messenger, responsible to no mere man. I am one who has actually seen Jesus our Lord with my own eyes. And your changed lives are the result of my hard work for him. 2 If in the opinion of others, I am not an apostle, I certainly am to you, for you have been won to Christ through me. 3 This is my answer to those who question my rights.  

1 Corinthians 15:8-9 8 Last of all I saw him too, long after the others, as though I had been born almost too late for this. 9 For I am the least worthy of all the apostles, and I shouldn't even be called an apostle at all after the way I persecuted the Church.  

1 Timothy 1:1 “Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ, by the commandment of God our Savior and the Lord Jesus Christ, our hope…”  

“For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior…” 1 Timothy 2:3 “For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior…”  

1 Timothy 4:10 “For to this end we both labor and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Savior of all men, especially of those who believe.”

Titus 1:3 “but has in due time manifested His word through preaching, which was committed to me according to the commandment of God our Savior…”  

Titus 2:10 “not pilfering, but showing all good fidelity, that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Savior in all things.”

Titus 3:4 “But when the kindness and the love of God our Savior toward man appeared…”  

2 To Timothy, a true son in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace from God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord.

1 Timothy 1:3-4 3 As I urged you when I went into Macedonia--remain in Ephesus that you may charge some that they teach no other doctrine, 4 nor give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which cause disputes rather than godly edification which is in faith.

Acts 18:18-19 18 So Paul still remained a good while. Then he took leave of the brethren and sailed for Syria, and Priscilla and Aquila were with him. He had his hair cut off at Cenchrea, for he had taken a vow. 19 And he came to Ephesus,  

4 nor give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which cause disputes rather than godly edification which is in faith.

1. The church at Ephesus may have been troubled by the same type of heresy that threatened the church at Colosse the teaching that to be acceptable to God, a person had to discover a certain hidden knowledge and had to worship angels.  

Colossians 2:8 “Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ.”

Colossians 2:18 “Let no one cheat you of your reward, taking delight in false humility and worship of angels, intruding into those things which he has not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind…”  

2. Thinking that it would aid in their salvation, some Ephesians constructed mythical stories based on Old Testament history or genealogies. Perhaps they placed too much emphasis on Jewish writings such as the Book of Jubilees.

Titus 3:9 “But avoid foolish controversies, genealogies, arguments, and quarrels about the Law, because these things are pointless and worthless.”

2 Peter 1:16 “For we did not follow cleverly devised fables when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of His majesty.”  

 5 Now the purpose of the commandment is love from a pure heart, from a good conscience, and from sincere faith,  

There are three sources of real love:  

“Blessed are the pure in heart, For they shall see God.” 1. Matthew 5:8 “Blessed are the pure in heart, For they shall see God.”  

2. In order to love properly, our conscience must be clear.  

1 Peter 3:16 and keep a good conscience so that in the thing in which you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ will be put to shame.

2 Timothy 1:3 I thank God, whom I serve with a clear conscience the way my forefathers did, as I constantly remember you in my prayers night and day,

3. When we attempt to love others without sincere faith in Christ, our efforts to minister become hollow and self-serving.  

1 Thessalonians 3:6 “But now that Timothy has come to us from you, and brought us good news of your faith and love, and that you always have good remembrance of us, greatly desiring to see us, as we also to see you—"
