Chapter 25 STD’s

STD’s STI’s Sexually transmitted disease or sexually transmitted infections- are infectious diseases spread from person to person through sexual contact. Epidemic- occurrences of diseases in which many people in the same place at the same time are infected.

Why do people go undiagnosed and untreated? Statistics 65 million people in USA are infected with STD’s Why do people go undiagnosed and untreated? 1. Many people with STD’s are without symptoms. Asymptomatic- without any symptoms of a disease. 2. They fail to report STD’s to the health department. 3. Embarrassment

High Risk Behavior 10,000 teens are infected with a STD daily. WHY? Being sexually active with more than one partner. Engaging in either unprotected or protected sex. Selecting high risk partners. Using alcohol and other drugs.

Consequences of std’s 1. Some STD’s are incurable!!! Virus Bacteria Protozoan Lice 2. Some STD’s cause cancer. Hepatitis B causes cancer of the liver. HPV causes cervical cancer.

Consequences of STD Cont: Some STD’s can cause complications that affect the ability to reproduce Females can develop pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) which damages reproductive organs and can cause sterility.   4. Some STD’s can be passed from an infected female to her child before, during, or after birth. A. STD’s can damage the bones, nervous system, and brain of a fetus B. Premature births can result, and infants infected with STD’s at delivery may become blind or develop pneumonia and some may die

Ways to avoid STD’s Abstinence- the deliberate decision to avoid harmful behaviors, including sexual activity before marriage and the use of tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs. Sexual activity is the cause-----STD’s are the effect/result. 2. Use refusal skills to avoid situations in which you may be at risk.

Chapter 25 Lesson 2

STD’s/ Virus Human Papilloma Virus (HPV)- is a virus that can cause gentile warts or be asymptomatic. Most common STD in USA. 50-75% of sexually active citizens acquire HPV at some time throughout their lives. There are 30 different types of HPV. Pap test determines HPV infection.

HPV continued 3. HPV can cause Cervical Cancer, cancer of the penis, and anus.

Genital Warts Genital Warts- are reddish or pink warts with cauliflower tops that appear on the genitals, vagina, or the cervix one to three months after the infection from HPV. Genital Warts are highly infectious and is spread from person to person through contact.

Genital Warts

Genital Warts

Genital Warts 3 months for infection to appear. Infants born to families infected with HPV may develop warts in their throats, obstructing the breathing passage. Removal is possible, but Wart will reappear.

Chlamydia Chlamydia- is a bacterial infection that affects the reproductive organs of both males and females. 40% of cases reported in teens 15-19 years old. Mostly asymptomatic 3. Males- might have discharge from penis and pain during urination.

Chlamydia Men

Chlamydia Women Females- signs and symptoms include: vaginal discharge painful urination abdominal pain A. When Chlamydia is left untreated it can cause infertility in males and females, PID, and premature births. B. Antibiotics can cure Chlamydia

Chlamydia Women

Genital Herpes Genital herpes- is an STD caused by the herpes simplex virus. There are two types of the herpes virus: Herpes simplex 1- can cause cold sores, fever blisters in, or around the mouth. Herpes simplex 2- can cause blister like sores on, in, or around the vagina, penis, and anus.

Genital Herpes A. Genital herpes can be asymptomatic, but blister like sores develop on genitals. B. The virus can spread without symptoms. C. Medication can relieve symptoms but not cure the virus. D.Valtrex helps dry up blister like sores.

Gonorrhea Gonorrhea- is a bacterial STD that usually affects the mucous membranes. Symptoms for males, Gonorrhea have penile discharge and pain during urination. Symptoms for females, Gonorrhea causes vaginal discharge, pain during urination, and puss-like sores inside the vagina.

Gonorrhea

Gonorrhea Female

Gonorrhea 3. The bacteria can spread to the bloodstream and cause permanent damage to the joints. 4. In infants, Gonorrhea can cause blindness.

Trichomoniasis Trichomoniasis- is an STD caused by a microscopic protozoan that results in infections of the vagina, urethra, and bladder. Females signs and symptoms include, limited symptoms with a development of vaginitis. Vaginitis- an inflammation of the vagina characterized by greenish frothy discharge, odor, irritation, and itching.

Trichomoniasis

Trichomonoiasis Males signs and symptoms include- itching, discharge, and painful urination. Use of Antibiotics to cure.

Syphilis

Syphilis Syphilis- is an STD that attacks many parts of the body and is caused by a small bacterium. Napoleon, Caesar, Cleopatra, and Henry VIII. 1. Syphilis begins with the development of a CHANCRE sore (Painless reddish sore at site of infection).

Syphilis

Syphilis 1. Syphilis progresses into three different stages. Stage 1 Chancre Stage 2 asymptomatic symptomatic Stage 3 latent stage. 2. If left untreated syphilis spreads throughout the body damaging internal organs, causing paralysis, convulsions, blindness, and heart disease. 3. Can be cured by Antibiotics

Did Columbus Bring Syphilis to Europe? Apparently, the New World isn't all that intrepid explorer Christopher Columbus discovered; seems we may also have him to thank for spreading the pathogen that causes syphilis—along with news of the Americas—to Europe. A new study provides what scientists say is the most convincing evidence to date that the Italian adventurer and some of his crew contracted the disease during their voyage to the New World— and unwittingly introduced it to the old one circa 1493.

Hepatitis B/C 1. Hepatitis- B- is a viral infection spread through bodily fluids. 90% of victims are asymptomatic. S@S include nausea, vomiting, jaundice, cancer of the liver (No CURE). 2. Hepatitis C- is a blood-borne infection that damages the liver with no treatment and no symptoms (Shorter life span).

Pubic Lice Pubic Lice- (often called "crabs" because of their crab-like appearance under a microscope) are six-legged creatures that most commonly infest hair in the pubic area. In most cases, pubic lice are transmitted sexually from the pubic hair of one person to another. But lice can be contracted in other ways, too — from infested clothing, towels, and bedding.

Seeking Treatment 1. Health Department- free STD screening. 2. Any licensed Doctor 3. Your Responsibility- notify any sex partner.

Chapter 25 Lesson 3

HIV/AIDS Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome- a disease in which the immune system of the patient is weakened. AIDS is the leading cause of death among the 25- 44 year age group. Human Immunodeficiency Virus- a virus that attacks the immune system.

AIDS/HIV 1. HIV attacks the helper T-Cells 2. Helper T-Cells recognize any foreign pathogen in the body and alert the whole immune system. Destruction of T-Cells systematically destroys the immune system. Opportunistic Disease- infections that occur in individuals who do not have a healthy immune system. HIV infection is progressive—1-12years.

Transmission 1. Sexual Intercourse/ Anal Sex 2. Sharing Needles 3. Mother to Baby 4. Infected blood product

Chapter 25 Lesson 4

Stages of HIV/AIDS There are 3 Stages to HIV/AIDS Stage 1:Infectious Stage- immediately after contracting virus (3-6weeks): fever, rash headache, body aches, and swollen glands. Stage 2: Asymptomatic Stage- a period of time during which a person infected with HIV has no symptoms, 6-10 years. Stage 3: Symptomatic Stage- the stage in which a person infected with HIV has symptoms as a result of immune deficiency. AIDS begins, S@S include: swollen glands, weight loss, and yeast infections.

Detecting HIV EIA- a test that screens of the HIV antibodies in the blood. A. Developing antibodies take 1 month to develop B. Certain health conditions mask antibodies. Western Blot- is the most common confirmation test for HIV. Treatments of HIV: $51,000 per month.
