It is more than the central hub of Valparaiso, it is a symbol of how serious we are about remaking our city to better adapt to changing needs and living patterns. A city that invests in its downtown is a city that preserves its history while embracing its future. The city administration is determined to complete a Renaissance to historic downtown Valparaiso, with the goal of making it one of the premier destination spots in Northwest Indiana for food, entertainment and specialty shopping . We have invested over $4 million in streetscape and improvements markedly improving ambience and functionality. Our restaurants are flourishing and our generous façade grant program is helping downtown property owners to transform their building fronts into heightened specifications. With more events, shops, restaurants and commerce happening in the downtown, it is quickly becoming the place to be in the evenings. The new downtown park, planned for construction in 2009, will further beautify the area and provide a special place for events and gatherings, or just relaxing. 6/1/2018 10:36 PM Review The Downtown Central Park plan was directed over the last year by a Committee of downtown stakeholders and City staff with specific public input sessions held on November 5, 2008. The resulting conceptual design includes landscaped open space, repurposing a segment of Lafayette Street as a brick paved, multi-purpose plaza street, an interactive water feature, exterior lighting, landscaping, public restrooms and a performance pavilion. The overall project development will incorporate storm water best management practices and to the extent possible sustainable site and building practices defined in the USGBC’s LEED NC2.2 program. The park not only serves as an economic catalyst for downtown commerce and a green community gathering site, but is also a trailhead for one our priority loops of the City’s Master Plan and Greenway System.
