Acids and Bases

What is an acid? A compound that produces H+ ions when dissolved in water Results in the solution containing a HIGH Hydrogen content Usually sour tastingthe ones that are safe to taste (O.J., lemon juice, vinegar)

HIGH H= ACID HCl H+ +Cl-

What is a base? A compound that produces hydroxide ions (OH-) when dissolved in water Results in a high OH- ion Bland tasting

Base HIGH OH- = BASE NaOH Na+ + OH- OH-

pH scale The measurement of how acidic or basic a substance is pH means % of hydrogen More hydrogen=lower pH= 1-6 Less hydrogen=higher pH= 8-12 Equal hydrogen to OH= pH 7 Usually seen on a pH scale

pH scale

Other indicators of acids and bases An indicator changes color when the pH goes above or below a certain value Litmus paper can be acidic or basic based Acidic substances turn litmus paper…pinks/reds Basic substances turn litmus paper… blues/violets

3-2-1 Summary 3 common acids are… 2 ways to detect acids and bases are… 1 as a pH value means that…

Acid and Base facts Your vomit contain hydrochloric acid…that’s why it burns coming up Tums contain a chemical called calcium carbonate which is a base Soda contains carbonic acid
