Science: The Monarch Butterfly The monarch cannot survive long, cold winters so every fall they fly south to spend the winter at roosting sites. Monarchs are the only insect to make such a long two-way migration. Monarchs can fly up to 3,000 miles to reach their winter destinations. Unlike birds and whales, which often make a round trip more than once, individual monarchs make the round trip only once. It is their children’s grandchildren that make the trip the following fall.
