Songhai Askia Muhammad- Set up a Muslim Empire. Built schools and set up schools for students to study Islam.

Axum King Ezana: Conquered Nubia. Established Christianity in Axum  strengthened ties with the Mediterranean world. Port located on the Red Sea; allowed trade to prosper Ivory, gold, spices Passed on religion of Christianity to Ethiopia.

East Africa Extensive Trade network Trade created a rich and varied mix of cultures Monsoon winds carried sailing vessels. Aided trade between East Africa and India

Khoisan People Able to adapt to the harsh conditions of the Kalahari Desert Did this by gathering roots and herbs and hunting small game. “Hunting and Gathering”

African Tradition Patrilineal Cultures- Important kinship and inheritance passed through the father Matrilineal Cultures- Inheritance passed through the mother’s side of the family Griots- West Africa; Professional poets who recited ancient stories; preserved traditions orally.
