KETONE BODIES….

Water soluble compound . Formed as a by product during oxidation of fatty acids in liver and kidney. Form when low level of insulin ,fasting, low carbohydrate in take. Three ketone bodies are formed ACETONE… ACETOACETATE… D-BETA-HYDROXYBUTYRATE.

FORMATION OF KETONE BODY

Acetoacetate and d-beta-hydroxybutyrate transported by blood to tissue other extrahepatic tissue. They are converted to acetyl-CoA and oxidized in citric cycle and provide energy. Skeletal, heart muscle, renal cortex,Brain under stravation condition use ketone body for energy.

Oxidation of ketone body

Accumulation of excess of ketone body in blood/body –ketosis Blood ph is lower due to accumulation of ketone body –ketoacidosis.
