Week 9: English 4 weeks left!!

Don’t forget to guess and answer why you have chosen your guess. Tuesday: Bell Ringer #11: A. NO CHANGE B. that line C. line D. lines Don’t forget to guess and answer why you have chosen your guess. The best answer is C. It creates a complete sentence and has subject-verb agreement. The best answer is NOT A because it creates an incomplete sentence; there is no predicate. The best answer is NOT B because it creates an incomplete sentence; there is no predicate. The best answer is NOT D because the singular verb lines does not agree with the plural subject mosaics.

Tuesday Reason: The best answer is C. It creates a complete sentence and has subject-verb agreement.

Today:4.5 We are going to look at Freedom of Speech and how it affects you. Learning Target: I can investigate how critical lenses both shape and reveal perspectives on real-world issues.

First: Quickwrite Use 5 minutes (don’t stop writing) to react/respond to the following statement: “Freedom of speech is fine, as long as you don’t do it in public.” Does this apply to any type of person (popular, celebrity etc) Share your answer with a partner and be prepared to share to the whole class.

Next: Read through the first amendment and annotate what freedoms are guaranteed to citizens according to the amendment. What can Congress not do? Establish a state run religion prohibit any religion limit freedom of speech limit peaceful gatherings stop people from asking the government to correct wrongs.

Persian-Gulf War: As we watch, answer the questions on your worksheet.

With Your ELBOW partner: Read President Bush’s Address on the Iraq Invasion Answer the guided questions on your worksheet. Be prepared to share. This started the Dixie Chicks controversy.

Next: On Your Own Read through the Dixie Chicks Controversy. Annotate important information about the controversy. Answer the guided questions. Finish early? Read your IRA book.

Lastly: On the back: According to the Freedom of Speech Amendment, do you feel the Dixie Chicks were free to say what they wanted? Why or why not? Use part of the amendment to support your answer.

Wednesday: #12 If the writer were to delete the quotation marks around the word paintings in the preceding sentence, the sentence would primarily lose a feature that suggests: F. that mosaics are not paintings in the usual sense of the word. G. how large and complicated the mosaics in St. Peter’s actually are. H. how carefully mosaics are put together. J. that the mosaics in St. Peter’s are not typical of mosaics in general. The best answer is F. This question essentially asks the test taker to determine why the writer most likely used quotation marks around the word paintings. These "paintings" refer to the intricate mosaics that line some of the basilica's dome, so they are not actual paintings. By using quotation marks, the writer signals the reader that the mosaics resemble paintings. The best answer is NOT G because the mosaics are described as "intricate." Therefore, this statement is untrue. The best answer is NOT H. Although the mosaics may have been carefully put together, this is not the writer's reason for putting quotation marks around the word paintings. By using quotation marks, the writer signals the reader that the mosaics resemble paintings; they are not actual paintings. The best answer is NOT J. This choice is ruled out because there is no information in the essay to suggest that the mosaics are atypical.

Reason: The best answer is F.

Today:4.5 We are going to continue our discussion of Freedom of Speech and how it affected the Dixie Chicks. Learning Target: I can investigate how critical lenses both shape and reveal perspectives on real-world issues.

Before We Read: Look at the questions on 260 and understand what each is asking you to look for in the article. Cross out Bullet 3 Discuss

AS I Read the Article: Highlight words or phrases that you feel show the author favors the Dixie Chicks. Annotate how the author shifts focus in the last two paragraphs (compared to the first two paragraphs)

After We Read: Answer the questions on page 260. Make sure you highlight examples of the perspectives you find/notice for the 5th bullet. We will discuss the article in 10 minutes. If you finish early read your IRA book!!

Lastly: Look at the two statements that Maines posted on the Dixie Chicks official website. (page 262). Highlight the differences in tone and content of the two posts. Then, on a separate sheet of paper explain which one is a more effective response and tell me why. One QUOTE from text One FULL paragraph (5-7 Sentences)

Thursday: Bell Ringer: (#13) A. NO CHANGE B. does contribute C. has contributed D. Contribute Don’t forget to answer why you have chosen your answer. The best answer is D because the subject and verb in this sentence agree. The best answer is NOT A because the singular verb contributes does not agree with the plural subject Sculptures. The best answer is NOT B because the singular verb does contribute does not agree with the plural subject Sculptures. The best answer is NOT C because the singular verb has contributed does not agree with the plural subject Sculptures.

Thursday Reason: The best answer is D because the subject and verb in this sentence agree.

Today:4.6 We will be looking at the trailer for Shut Up and Sing. Learning Target: I can analyze how a director’s use of cinematic and narrative techniques affect viewers’ perception.

First: Take 5 minutes to answer the KWL Chart, then predict what the preview will contain on your worksheet. Need to have 4 facts you know 3 Questions about what you want to know Then, predict what the preview/trailer will contain Be prepared to share your answer and reasoning.

On Our First Viewing: Answer the Prediction questions about each criticism. Make sure to use full sentences and well thought out answers.

Shut Up and Sing Trailer

On Our First Viewing: Discuss Answer the Prediction questions about each criticism. Make sure to use full sentences and well thought out answers. Take a moment and share with your partner. Did you have similar predictions? Now, go back through and mark which perspective each question is. We will discuss them in after the viewing.

Our Second Viewing: Focus on the chart. What do we see? What do we hear? What do we read? How is it put together? What is the effect?

Shut Up and Sing Trailer

Our Second Viewing: Discuss Focus on the chart. What do we see? What do we hear? What do we read? How is it put together? What is the effect?

Next: Fill in the last column (What you learned) on the KWL chart. Include any bias you found or focus on a perspective. Share your knowledge with a partner.

Lastly: Writing Prompt Make sure you use complete sentences and full paragraphs. After viewing Shut Up and Sing, write two full paragraphs that explains how Kappel and Peck’s use of cinematic and/or narrative techniques reveal the bias in the trailer. Then, transition to how the clip reveals the importance of a particular lens. (1 paragraph) Make sure to focus your answer around a single lens and to use vivid descriptions of elements in the film to support your claim. Also, make sure there is a smooth transition between the paragraphs.

Finish Early? Answer the Check your Understanding on page 265 OR 2. Read your IRA book. If you can’t read your IRA book, you must do the Check your Understanding.

Friday Bell Ringer: #14 Which of the following alternatives to the underlined portion would NOT be acceptable? F. Yet, G. Therefore, H. Still, J. Nonetheless, The best answer is G. This question asks the test taker to find the word that would NOT be an acceptable replacement for the underlined portion. The introductory word Therefore is unacceptable because it incorrectly suggests a cause-effect relationship between the information in this sentence and the information in the last sentence of the preceding paragraph. The best answer is NOT F because Yet means about the same as However and would be an acceptable alternative. The best answer is NOT H because Still means about the same as However and would be an acceptable alternative. The best answer is NOT J because Nonetheless means about the same as However and would be an acceptable alternative.

Reason: The best answer is G. This question asks the test taker to find the word that would NOT be an acceptable replacement for the underlined portion. The introductory word Therefore is unacceptable because it incorrectly suggests a cause-effect relationship between the information in this sentence and the information in the last sentence of the preceding paragraph

Today: Each of you will find a job you are interested in applying for. Then you will have a Mock Interview for it.

To Do: Check out a computer and look for a job in the field you want to be in after high school or college. Then email me the job detail so I can print it for you. (sarah.webster.@kenton.kyschools.us) Go through your job and highlight the skills you will need and any other useful information you might need to know. Once you’re ready for your interview, write your name on the board. While you wait, look up questions that might be asked in your interview, OR READ your IRA book!

Day 15 A. NO CHANGE B. consider some, C. consider, some, D. consider, some The best answer is A. No punctuation is needed here. The other choices add unnecessary and potentially confusing commas. The best answer is NOT B because it inserts an unnecessary comma before the preposition of. The best answer is NOT C because it illogically sets off the word some with unnecessary commas. The best answer is NOT D because the unnecessary comma after consider suggests a pause that confuses the reader.
