Growth of Imperial Powers Essential Question: What were the causes and consequences of New Imperialism?

The Jewel in the Crown The British East India Company held indirect rule in India since the mid-18th century. Hired sepoys, Indian soldiers who were paid to protect the company’s interests.

The Sepoy Mutiny 1857 – Rumors spread that the British were using cow and pig fat to grease their cartridges. Hindu’s and Muslims both have dietary restrictions that forbid this.

The Sepoy Mutiny Soldiers who refused to load their rifles were charged with mutiny and publicly humiliated. Sparked a rebellion Crushed by the British -> removed the BEIC and established direct control over India.

The Jewel in the Crown Queen Victoria became Empress of India and India became her “Jewel in the Crown” Although the rebellion failed it sparked nationalist feelings that would eventually help throw off British rule.

British Colonial Rule Effects Western education Brought infrastructure (roads, canals, hospitals) Collected heavy taxes using zamindars, or Indian tax collectors Agriculture: food -> cotton = famine Indians became second class citizens

Imperialism in Latin America Manifest Destiny – The 19th century belief that it was the destiny of the U.S. to expand from coast to coast According to the Monroe Doctrine the U.S. regarded any European Imperialism in the Western Hemisphere an act of aggression.

Imperialism in Latin America Roosevelt Corollary – established the U.S. would collect debts (as a last resort) from L.A. countries to ensure that European powers stayed away from the region.

“The White Man’s Burden” By Rudyard Kipling Take up the White Man’s burden Send forth the best ye breed Go, bind your sons to exile To serve your captive’s need; To wait, in heavy harness, On fluttered folk and wild Your new-caught sullen peoples, Half-devil and half-child. Take up the White Man’s burden In patience to abide To veil the threat of terror And check the show of pride; By open speech and simple, An hundred times made plain, To seek another’s profit And work another’s gain
