Presentation transcript:

The nuts, Bolts and everything in between of Behavioral Interviewing

Nonverbal Communication What is nonverbal commuation? Communication without the use of spoken language. Nonverbal communication includes gestures, facial expressions, and body positions (known collectively as “body language”), as well as unspoken understandings and presuppositions, and cultural and environmental conditions that may affect any encounter between people. -Dicitonary.com Communication is 7% Verbal and 93% Nonverbal -ACM U -firm handshake -what to wear -eye contact -smile -posture -how you sit/cross your legs -arrive on time -tone of voice -background noise -be mindful of body odor .. smoke, strong perfumes, BO

Types of Interviews Phone Screens Video Interviews Onsite Interviews 1-1 Panel Round Robin Group ….How do you prepare for them? So glad you asked! Types of Interviews ***Play Video **** Phone screen/Video - -No background noise -Schedule a time where you won’t be interrupted - Sometimes phone screens are impromptu...You’re driving...tell them you’ll call them back- In a moment -Answer the phone and check your voicemail -Be present, lose distracting items like a laptop, snacks, etc. -let them hear you smile - smiles can be heard as well as seen. Smiling as you talk will naturally brighten your tone of voice. -keep in mind, phone screeners cannot SEE you, they can only HEAR you - convey your personality with eloquent language and expressive tone. -do what makes you feel comfortable as long as it’s not distracting (i.e. standing up, walking around, waving hands) -For Video - -Dress appropriately like you are going into the office to interview -Go to a quiet space - Try to be in an area where there is not a lot of distractions and movement -Do not eat/drink during the interview -Center yourself in the frame of the camera...don’t sit too close or sit too far -For Onsite -While waiting...be present! Your interview starts the minute you walk thru the door! -Be pleasant to the receptionist, take a seat and STAY OFF YOUR PHONE. ** Pay attention to the culture - you can learn a lot about a company by just sitting and watching. -*Don’t forget a firm handshake -

Tips and Tricks To Land the Job... DO’s - -Dress appropriately for the interview. Ask what the company culture is like -Arrive about 10 minutes early/Your interview starts the minute you arrive (via the phone, video, or in-person) -Communicate Longevity -Prepare interview questions -Be Your Charming Self! (Smile!) -Bring copies of your Resume/Refs Don’t s- -Slouch, Chew Gum, Check your watch/phone during the interview -Say you do not have any questions, when asked if you have any questions! Be Prepared!! -Be Negative -Ask about company benefits (unless the HM brings it up) -Embellish your work history/experience DO Dress to impress -when in doubt, ask your interviewer before the day what he/she suggests you wear Arrive early -nothing says you don’t care quite like being tardy! Map out your destination and give yourself twice the amount of time needed to get there. For phone interviews and video screens, be sitting by your phone five minutes before the call - or be on video chat ready to go! Prepare Interview Questions -ask Qs about the organization … the management style, plans for growth for the company, a day in the life, company culture Be yourself -the main point of a behavioral interview is to deduce whether or not you’ll fit in, so be yourself! Smile a lot - smiling is truly contagious and your interviewer will associate that feeling of positivity with you if you do. Bring copies of your resume/references -This might not be necessary, but be sure to ask your interviewer before the big day what you need to bring. It’s often a courtesy to bring hard copies of your resume for each of your interviewers, as well as a list of your professional references. DON’T Slouch, chew gum, check your phone/watch -bad posture, rude habits like chewing gum, or not being 100% present (i.e. checking your phone or watch) all communicates to your interviewer that you don’t care Say you do not have any Qs -this communicates a certain lack of preparedness and passion for the opportunity at stake. To not have valuable Qs in mind to ask, you communicate a certain level of passivity that isn’t professional/appropriate for a job interview Be negative -Grumbling about a past boss, job, (or any complaint for that matter) will likely communicate to your interviewer that you’re a risky hire. Someone with a bad attitude can do immense damage to an organization and that’s exactly what recruiters are wanting to avoid! Don’t ask about company perks -This communicates that you might want the job for the wrong reasons Embellish your work history / experience -sell yourself, but also be transparent when discussing your work history, experience, projects, and skill sets
