WHAT IS OTEAM? The OTEAM is made up of current undergraduate students at IUPUI. These leaders are selected through a competitive application process and are trained as campus experts. The OTEAM helps new incoming students get acquainted to college life at IUPUI. The OTEAM also helps with mentoring a First Year Seminar Class and orientations that all freshman students are required to attend.

SESSION GOALS This session is all about getting students involved!

SESSION GOALS We will discuss how group size and dynamics affect these activities. Further, we will provide helpful hints and tools for mentors to take into the classroom.

SESSION GOALS We will explore how mentors can use collaborative activities and icebreakers to engage students in classroom activities. Bluh… Yay!

GET READY TO BREAK SOME ICE!! Human machine Each team will have 5 minutes to design a “human machine” where the members are components of the machine. All of the human components rely on each other for movement, that is, one action leads to another. When the planning time has ended, each team is to demonstrate its “human machine”. The rest of the group will guess what the machine is.

ICE BREAKER ADVANTAGES Group gets 'warmed up' Opens communication within each team Develops team building Increases team cohesiveness through simple problem solving Allows participants the chance to work as a team Ice Breakers are fun!

KEEP IN MIND… As mentors, we are always dealing with diverse populations of students. Special Accommodations Ethnicity Religion Backgrounds Group size and dynamics (i.e. majors, student population, purpose) …and more It is helpful and necessary to adjust icebreakers and your approach in order to properly develop a peer community.

ICE BREAKER LEVELS Level 1 – Ice breakers at this level are low risk and allow students to get to know one another. These are good to use when a group of people is meeting each other for the first time. Level 2 – Ice breakers at this level challenge a group to get outside of their comfort zone by physically getting closer. These are good to use after the group has known each other for a few weeks. Level 3 – Ice breakers at this level are higher risk because the group gets emotionally closer and more invested in one another. They focus on people for who they are on the inside and brings the group closer. These are good to use once a group has reached a level of comfort and trust with one another.

Travel to the designated sign that you feel the closest too in response to the announced statements.
