8th Grade Math: Standards Common Core state standards separated into 5 domains: •Number System [chapter 1] •Expressions and Equations [chapters 2,3] •Functions [chapter 4] •Geometry [chapters 5,6,7,8] •Statistics and Probability [chapter 9]

8th Grade Math: Mathematical Practices Will emphasize 8 “Mathematical Practices” •MP1 Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. •MP2 Reason abstractly and quantitatively. •MP3 Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. •MP4 Model with mathematics. •MP5 Use appropriate tools strategically. •MP6 Attend to precision. •MP7 Look for and make use of structure. •MP8 Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

8th Grade Math One lesson per day (depending on the lesson) Students will complete notes and classwork in class (whatever is not finished is added to homework; classwork is turned in the following day along with homework) Mid-Chapter quiz each chapter 21st Century project each chapter (Google slides presentation always due the day of the test, class time will be given) Performance task each chapter Study guide after each chapter (very similar to test) Vocabulary foldable and test for each chapter Chapter test at the end of each chapter Review tests after two chapters

ConnectEd is the online math textbook ConnectED 8th Grade Math ConnectEd is the online math textbook ConnectED This website is a wonderful resource it has videos, extra worksheets, review quizzes, etc.

8th Grade Math-Classwork/Homework Homework will be assigned each night. Homework is meant to reinforce concepts taught in class that day. Please be sure to check your student's PACK planner and our websites each night since homework is assigned and updated each night Classwork and homework will be turned in the same day in the morning during homeroom. Anything turned in after homeroom is considered LATE

Math Homework Check-off **For full credit All Work completed on notebook paper Paper is folded in half, and all work is in two columns Every step is clear and neatly shown, and all answers boxed or highlighted All work is graded in red pen, and the number wrong is circled on the first page. ** Any problems that were missed are CIRCLED and redone in red pen next to the original problem. Each step is clearly shown.** If unable to get the correct answer, see teacher* for help and/or to see if there is an error on the key. *Available most days @ 7:30 am **Error analysis is half your homework grade if homework is not graded half of the work was not done so grade will be half credit

8th Grade Science 8th Grade Pacing is 2 days per lesson Read a section Take notes in journal Review section PowerPoint Lab demonstrations and/or chapter projects (be sure to check project due dates online) Section quizzes (open note; a quiz will be given for each section) Interactive Reader (IR) workbook questions Chapter tests-Multiple choice, free response, matching, short answer/essay (taken on the chromebook)

8th Grade Science-Homework/Classwork Interactive Reader (IR) sections will be assigned throughout the week for each section (students must read, highlight answers to questions and write the answers in the space provided in complete sentences) Science journal-notes will be taken on chapter vocab, each section, section quizzes will be attached in notebook and lab notes will be written in journal. Journals will not be collected every day. Students will be aware of 3 assignments that will be graded and there will always be a mystery assignment to be graded. It is students responsibility to update journal and table of contents daily. **To best support your student check teacher website daily and student PACK planner daily

Absent work policy •You have one day for every absent day to complete all assignments that were missed while you were out. Any assignment not complete by the due date will not be accepted. –For example, if you missed Monday and returned Tuesday, missing work will be due Wednesday. •1 day absent= 1 day for make up work, 2 days absent= 2 days for make up work, etc. **If absent the day a project is due, project is due the next day no exceptions How do I get my absent work? •Collect work from absent area. •Complete all assignments on absent sheet. •Absent Tests/Quizzes- come before school (I am available most mornings by 7:30) or make an appointment with me for after school to make up missing test/quiz

Late work policy •Late work will only be accepted 1 day late for half credit. Late work must be turned into the late bin with my initials and date in which I received the work. •Only exception is a parent/guardian signed note. •If a student does not turn in work, a lunch detention may be assigned •Goal is to prepare students for high school. **Large assignments and projects that are turned in late will be penalized one letter grade for each day they are late

GFA-Grade First Aid What is it?-It is the opportunity for a student to make corrections on a quiz or test that they score below a 70% on (except science quizzes since they are open note). How does it work?-It is the student's responsibility to complete a GFA, they must follow exact procedures How does this affect their grade?-I average the two scores after corrections have been made; however the highest they can bring a score up to is a 70%

Discipline policy: DCIS implements a progressive discipline policy school-wide that all classrooms support. It is expected that all students will treat one another with kindness and respect. Class Rules: Be Respectful Be Responsible Be safe **We do classroom teams in my class Rewards: **Winning team reward 1-Verbal praise 2-Positive note home or phone call 3-Ability to participate in school activities 4- A successful 8th grade year Consequences: 1-Detention (after school and/or lunch) 2-Call to parent 3-Office referral 4-Class suspension (ALC) 5-Lowered citizenship 6-Serious behavior problem=immediate referral to the office

Academic dishonesty The temptation to cheat or plagiarize can be a problem at this age. Cheating is marked by dishonest intent to give OR receive unearned rewards and includes sharing or copying homework/classwork/projects, giving or receiving answers on tests, and plagiarism. Students who show academic dishonesty in any way will receive NO CREDIT for the assignment. In addition, their citizenship grade for the following grading period will be an N.

Weekly grade checks Grades will be updated weekly on the Aeries website, which you may access at any time. Students are required to check grades EVERY Wednesday, log them in their PACK planner and obtain a parent signature These will be checked in Thursday morning during homeroom Students that do not have this completed by Friday morning will serve a lunch detention **This is meant to be a tool to keep updated on your child’s progress so there are no surprises at progress report/report card time **Students should come to us if they have a question about their grades and always save ALL work; mistakes can happen

Character Ed During PACK time on Mondays we will be reading Wonder by R.J. Palacio Meant to promote positive school environment

Chromebooks •7th and 8th grade students will be carrying their CB’s. •CB will be housed in the homerooms and NOT be sent home. •CB will be checked out to students from the library **Be mindful of damage that can happen with throwing of backpacks

Tutoring More information to come, permission slips will be sent home Open door policy **I am also available most mornings at 7:30 to provide extra help

Extras/End-of-the Year Activities/Promotion Parent-teacher conferences will be held September 25-29 (please keep an eye out for our sign-up information) We hope that all students will be eligible for the recognition ceremony and special eighth grade privileges that coincide with promotion. There are both academic and behavioral requirements that must be met to take part in the ceremony and other events These requirements are clearly stated in the DCIS PACK planner and are emphasized throughout the year
