“EfE process” - from Dobris to Belgrade “2007 Belgrade Report” 1991 Dobris 1993 Lucerne 1995 Sofia → 1998 Aarhus → 2003 Kiev → 2007 Belgrade

EEA‘s Belgrade report To answer to the ministers request in Kiev request to produce a short, policy oriented indicator based report responding to the Belgrade agenda ….. assessing progress on EECCA strategy…. based on recent information. Progress and benchmarking Basis for action Awareness raising/communication

Structure of section 2.3 Water (stress) 2.3.1 Key messages 2.3.2 Water resources and use 2.3.3 Drinking water problems 2.3.4 Climate impacts on water 2.3.5 Droughts and floods 2.3.6 Pollution and water quality

Key messages from the water chapter In EECCA significant decline in water quality monitoring over the last 15 years. incl. Water supply and sanitation. Some stabilisation since early ‘90s due to brake down of industries Total water abstraction in the region has decreased by more than 20 % during the last 15 years. Since the late 1990s the annual water uses by agriculture, energy cooling and industry have remained nearly constant. Severe problems concerning droughts and floods hit also the EECCA and SEE region. This is expected to be increased under climate change

Open questions for review process Additional information on water quality a. Summary information on state and trend in water quality at national large river catchment or regional scale. b. Examples illustrating that some rivers are still heavily polluted. c. Examples illustrating reduced pollution/improved water quality from 1990 to 2004 due to reduced industry production and agricultural activities. Additional information on drinking water quality Recent information (2004-2006) on drought episodes and flood events is appreciated.
