Hope Is the Thing with Feathers Questions What is the central idea or message of this poem? What tone (attitude) does the author create?

Hope Is the Thing with Feathers Questions What is a characteristic of hope, or “the little bird”? An important characteristics of hope is that it never stops at all. It is resilient even in the face of gales and storm, or pain and sorrow. Another important characteristic of hope is that it keeps many people “warm,” or supports them through difficult times.

Hope Is the Thing with Feathers Questions Describe the speaker’s personal experience with hope. Use evidence from the poem. The speaker uses the phrases “on the strangest sea” and “in the chilliest land” to show she has had hope in strange, unfamiliar, or adverse situations. The speaker says that hope has never asked “a crumb” of her, which indicates that she has never had to sacrifice something to maintain hope, even in the hardest of times. This shows that the speaker might be naturally hopeful or optimistic. The speaker was describing her positive personal experiences with hope. This indicates that the poet has used hope to support her through many “storms” and “gales.”

Analyzing the Structure of a Poem pg. 148 1st read How can you tell that the speaker of the poem is an older person? What does the speaker recall seeing in his lifetime? What does the speaker imagine when he thinks about the future?

Analyzing the Structure of a Poem pg. 148 2nd read Underline words in the first stanza that explain hat time frames the speaker is thinking about. Circle the phrase that shows how the speaker feels about the future at the beginning of this stanza. What is the main idea of each stanza?

Analyzing the Structure of a Poem pg. 149 Questions- Numbered Heads Together State the theme of the poem. Give at least one example of a sentence from the poem that develops the poem’s theme. As we get older and approach the “winter” of our lives, we think about our past and about a future we may not see. The final sentences relates to this theme because the speaker seems to decide to focus on the past “times that were before” and the “feet and voices” in the present.

Analyzing the Structure of a Poem pg. 149 What does the speaker mean by “when winter comes without a spring that I shall ever see”? Summarize the poem in your words. The speaker reflects upon his life: things he’s done and seen, and people he’s known. He wonders about the future when life will go on without him. Analyzing the Structure of a Poem pg. 152 #4 The repetition of the lines about Brennan keep bringing the reader back to Brennan’s character and how the poet sees him as a hero. The rest of the poem tells about Brennan robbing the mayor on the highway, which by itself would just make Brennan seem like “the bad guy.” But again and again, the lines are repeated that he is “bold and undaunted.” From this, a reader understand the common people probably saw the mayor and other rich people as unjust and Brennan as a hero. #5 The four- and two-line stanzas in the poem serve different purposes. The four-line stanzas tell the story of Brennan. Each stanza adds a new scene to the story. For example. The second four-line stanza tells about Brennan meeting the mayor on the highway, and how the mayor wants to take him in. In the third four-line stanza, Brennan’s wife gives him a gun, and in the fourth, he robs the mayor. In contrast, the two-line stanzas area all repetitions of the same line. Basically, these lines tell the reader how many people of the time viewed Brennan.
