Minor key signatures review

The Classical Era c.1750 - 1830 Saw a move away from the ornate styles of the baroque period Music used well balanced and clear cut structures Melodic lines were simple and clear and also graceful and contained regular phrasing Main compositions were: Classical Symphony, String Quartet, Concerto and Solo Sonata

Composers The period was dominated by 3 Viennese composers (the Viennese School): Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) Ludwig Van Beethoven (1770-1827) Beethoven spanned 2 musical periods. His early music was in the classical style and his later music around the turn of the century was very much Romantic in spirit

The Orchestra The harpsichord was still used in orchestras but as the brass and woodwind sections evolved it was no longer used At the start of the classical period the orchestra was still small, but soon grew with the addition of wind instruments At the end of the 18th century the newly invented clarinet joined the woodwind section

Standard Classical Orchestra Strings: Violins, Violas, Cellos, Double Basses Woodwinds: Flutes, Oboes, Clarinets, Bassoons Brass: Trumpets, French Horns Percussion: Timpani

Listening Mozart: Eine Kleine Nacht Musik (1787)
