September 2005 doc.: IEEE 802.11-05/0645r4 September 2006 Abstract This document is the third IEEE 802.11 – TIA TR8 liaison report. The first report (11-05-0645-04, September 2005) provided an overview of TIA, with emphasis on Broadband activities. The second report (11-05-1162-01, November 05) provided an overview of the public Safety Use Cases considered for communication in an incident scene. This report summarizes recent activities within the Broadband Task Group (BBTG) that is evaluating suitable protocols for an incident scene in the Public Safety 4.9GHz band. September 2005 doc.: IEEE 802.11-05/0645r4 September 2006 Broadband Task Group A Broadband Task Group (BBTG) was created in October 2005 to evaluate the needs of Public Safety users for wireless broadband applications considered by TR8. The BBTG currently reviews proposals for using 802.11 and 802.16 in the 4.9GHz band as a PHY/MAC protocol for public safety in the incident scene. The evaluation process consists of two parallel activities: Developing airlink requirements for public safety needs Simulate typical use cases to evaluate the performance of the two protocols Various authorities (such as the Department of Homeland Security) would prefer that only one protocol is selected to be deployed in the 4.9GHz band. Use Case Simulation - Current Status September 2006 Use Case Simulation - Current Status Simple use cases were simulated for incident scenes involving a single public safety jurisdiction: Police, EMS and Firefighters. Communications in the incident scene involved fairly light traffic loads. The simulation results demonstrated excellent communication performance commensurate with mission critical expectations for video, voice and various data applications. A comprehensive use case is now being analyzed with five different jurisdictions in a large incident scene (one mile by one mile). Six simultaneous video feeds in addition to heavy voice and data traffic are simulated. It is anticipated that results will be available later this year or in early 2007. Ariel Sharon, Motorola
