Why did Powerful civilizations begin in this area? What are Semitic people? Abraham and Ishmael.. Polytheism, Allah, etc…

Why is Mecca important? Why did the Arabian Peninsula become so important?

Who was Muhammad? Why did he go meditate? What did Muhammad believe? How factual is this?

Why did Muhammad leave for Madinah? What happened when he was in Madinah? Why go back to Makkah?

Similar and different to Christianity? The 5 pillars of Islam…..this is a biggee. The Shari’ah, and what it means to the Islamic faith.

Chapter 6.4 The Culture of Islam

Muslim scholars preserved the ancient works of Aristotle and the Greek philosophers. This was aided by paper from China, and libraries in Baghdad and Damascus

Ibn-Rushd: wrote commentary on Aristotle’s works, that simplified it for scholars. Created the Arabic system of numbers that we use today. Created the basis of what is modern Algebra.(Blame them, I do!) Created the first computer; the astrolabe, that helped with travel.

Ibn Sina: Created Medical Encyclopedia that became the basis of study for Medieval Europe. Ibn Khaldun: Explain history as a cycle of life, death and rebirth. Omar Khayyam: Poet who used direct lines, and wrote the Rubaiyat.

The Arabian Nights is a collection of folkales, fables and romances. Islamic art is usually found in it’s mosques and temples. Samarra in Iraq is one of the largest mosques in the world.

The Mosque at Cordoba in southern Spain is in great condition today. Alhambra palace in Granada, Spain is the finest example of extravagance in Islamic architecture. Arabesques used geometric patterns instead of people in decorations.
