DO NOW The Atmosphere Hill Science 6. The Atmosphere 1. Which layer is the densest layer of the atmosphere containing almost 90% of the atmosphere’s mass?
Atmosphere layers Thermosphere Extends from 80km out Air is thinnest in this layer and much less dense Temp rises the higher you go (molecules moving.
Layers of the Atmosphere
 Gasses make up the air around us  Primary gasses are Nitrogen and Oxygen  Small amounts of many other gasses are present.
 Earth’s atmosphere is divided into several different atmospheric layers extending from the Earth’s surface outward: › Troposphere › Stratosphere › Mesosphere.
Layers of the Atmosphere
Earth Sun All planets have an atmosphere, a layer of gases that surrounds them. Earth Atmosphere Sun Radiation.
Weather & Climate Chapter 1 Section 3. OBJECTIVE: Investigate and describe characteristics of the atmospheric layers.
Layers of Earth’s atmosphere. How was the atmosphere formed? Atmosphere has changed (evolved) over time. Gases are held near the surface by gravity. Earth’s.
Atmosphere. What makes up our atmosphere?  Nitrogen  Oxygen  Argon.

Presentation transcript:

Atmospheric Temperature Troposphere – temperature decreases with altitude. temperature decreases about 6.5oC every kilometer Stratosphere – temperature increases because of the ozone layer. ozone molecules absorb some of the suns energy which increases temperature

Atmospheric Temperature Mesosphere – temperature decreases because it is the coldest layer. Thermosphere – temperature increases, it’s the hottest layer. The Thermosphere and Exosphere are the first layers to receive the Sun’s rays so temperatures are high.

High concentration of ozone Exosphere Thermosphere Mesosphere High concentration of ozone Stratosphere Troposphere

Atmospheric Temperatures Troposphere – temperature decreases Stratosphere – temperature increases because of the ozone layer. Mesosphere – temperature decreases because it is the coldest layer. Thermosphere – temperature increases because it is the hottest layer.
