PREPARED FOR CLASS 4-315 BY MRS. DAVIS WHAT IS THE TRUE PRICE OF YOUR DUNKIN DONUT??? A Look At Palm Oil PREPARED FOR CLASS 4-315 BY MRS. DAVIS

WHAT DO YOU THINK WE MEAN WHEN WE TALK ABOUT TRUE PRICE? TURN AND TALK…

TRUE PRICE… When we consider “true price,” we explore the positive & negative impacts of our product choices on ourselves, other people, animals, and the earth. We always want to make MOGO CHOICES (MOST GOOD AND LEAST HARM).

TRUE PRICE WHAT DOES THIS?

WHAT’S THE TRUE PRICE OF YOUR DUNKIN DONUT? HAVE TO DO WITH THIS?

TRUE PRICE HOW DO THESE PRODUCTS?

TRUE PRICE IMPACT THE SUMATRA TIGER?

TURN AND TALK: THINK ABOUT IT!

TAKE A LOOK INSIDE YOUR SHOPPING CART…. Look in your shopping cart, and you probably see soap and other beauty products, baked goods & other processed foods, perhaps some cleaning products.

WHAT’S THE TRUE PRICE OF YOUR DUNKIN DONUT? What you don’t see is that about half those products contain palm oil, which means they are contributing to the destruction of forests and communities, and the extermination of endangered orangutans and tigers, and other wildlife.

WHAT IS PALM OIL? Palm oil is produced from the fruit of the oil palm,a plant native to Africa. However, it is now grown primarily in Southeast Asia on massive commercial plantations. It is used as an ingredient in everything from baked goods to candy bars to cosmetics.

HOW CAN I TELL IF A PRODUCT CONTAINS PALM OIL? Check the ingredients label! Palm oil has a number of derivatives, so unfortunately sometimes it can be difficult to spot.Keep an eye out for: palm kernel oil, palm fruit oil, sodium lauryl sulfate andpalmitic acid.

What Contains Palm Oil 1 in 10 supermarket products contain palm oil and this number is rising.

1 IN 10……

WHAT ARE THE ISSUES ASSOCIATED WITH PALM OIL? Although the oil palm is originally from Africa, most palm oil today is commercially grown in Southeast Asia. Rainforest land is being slashed and burned to make room for massive industrial plantations. This deforestation leads to the destruction of habitat for the endangered orangutan, as well asa number of other plant and animal species. In addition, large amounts of greenhouse gases are released during the clearing of rainforests; this has made Indonesia the third largest emitter of carbon dioxide in the world. And finally, palm oil has been linked to human rights abuses such as child and slave labor.

WHAT ARE SOME OTHER EFFECTS OF PALM OIL? To make room for palm oil plantations, forests and peatlands are cleared. This means both people and animals lose their homes. Many people are evicted from their own land. People in indigenous communities that rely on the forests lose their livelihoods. Draining and burning peatlands and clearing rainforests releases huge amounts of carbon into the atmosphere. Orangutans, especially, are being burned, shot, kidnapped, and killed in other ways to remove them from their habitats and stop them from destroying young palm trees on the plantations.

WHAT ARE SOME EFFECTS OF PALM OIL PRODUCTION? Plantation workers are usually paid (and sometimes treated) poorly. Human and animal communities find their air, water, and land polluted from fires, chemicals, pesticides, and untreated palm oil-mill effluent. Plantations cause soil erosion and increased sedimentation in rivers. Plantations hinder animal migration and block travel corridors. Roads & plantations facilitate illegal hunting and poaching. Plantations use large amounts of chemical fertilizers.

WHAT IS SUSTAINABLE PALM OIL? Sustainable palm oil is an approach to oil palm agriculture that aims to produce palm oil without causing deforestation or harming people.

???SUSTAINABLE PALM OIL????

WHAT DO YOU THINK?

SOME OPTIONS FOR ACTION: As consumers, the people who purchase products, we havean enormous amount of power to change the palm oil industry because companies listen directly to us! If we convince companies like McDonalds, Kellogg’s, etc. to use deforestation-free palm oil, then they are able to influence palm oil supplier who then influence the practices that growers use on the ground in Southeast Asia. HERE ARE A FEW POSSIBILITIES: Educate ourselves and others about the impact on people, animals, & the plant of palm oil plantations.

HOW CAN WE HELP?

OPTIONS FOR ACTION: Lobby both companies that own palm oil plantations and those that use palm oil in their products to change their practices and implement only truly sustainable, humane policies and practices. Write letters to these companies letting them know how you feel. Put pressure on your government officials (and those of countries most involved) to strengthen regulations that will require truly sustainable, humane palm oil operations. Start petitions. WHAT ELSE CAN YOU DO HERE IN YOUR SCHOOL COMMUNITY? HOW CAN YOU EDUCATE OTHERS?

SO WHAT DID YOU LEARN TODAY? TAKE A MOMENT TO STOP AND JOT SOMETHING INTERESTING YOU LEARNED TODAY. WHAT ELSE DO YOU STILL WANT TO KNOW? WHAT WILL YOU DO NEXT? SHARE WITH YOUR PARTNER.

NEXT STEPS: LEARN MORE ABOUT THIS ISSUE TO FIND OUT WHAT DUNKIN DONUTS IS DOING IN RESPONSE TO THIS ISSUE BY READING THE FOLLOWING ARTICLE FOR HOMEWORK: Read at least two of the following stories and for each one: summarize the main idea of each one with at least three supporting details. You may add on your own insight—what it teaches you. Practice paraphrasing. Also, jot at least one of your own high order thinking questions and make an attempt to answer it by supporting with text based evidence. Then synthesize –combine the new information presented to you in all three of the articles Make sure you summarized by stating the main idea with supporting details—paraphrased in your own words. http://news.mongabay.com/2014/0919-doughnuts-palm-oil-zero-deforestation.html https://www.greenbiz.com/blog/2014/09/19/dunkin-donuts-pledges-dunk-only-sustainable-palm-oil http://www.npr.org/sections/thesalt/2013/03/12/174140241/can-dunkin-donuts-really-turn-its-palm-oil-green TO PREPARE FOR TAKING ACTION AND TO GET MORE BACKGROUND INFO, VISIT THE FOLLOWING WEBSITES:
