Do Now: True or False? Justify! If the net force on a body is zero, then its velocity will not change. An unbalanced force on a body will always impact the objects speed. The reason why initially moving objects tend to come to rest in our “everyday” life is because they are being acted on by unbalanced forces. An unbalanced force on an object will always change the objects direction. True False (Skater on ice grabs a rope and swings in circles. This is true for velocity only. True (Friction) False (I can apply an unbalanced force in the direction it is moving and simply accelerate it in the same direction.)

Aim: How can we apply Newton’s Third Law? Homework:

What happened when The shuttle count down got to zero? Why? Using this information, how can you describe Newton’s Third Law?

Review – Newton’s 1st and 2nd Law Newton's First Law - Inertia - An object at rest will stay at rest until a force acts on it. An object in motion will stay in motion until a force acts on it. Newton's Second Law - The amount of force and mass an object has will determine its acceleration.

How can we describe Newton’s Third Law of Motion? Forces come in pairs (twos) Every force has an equal and opposite force Every action has an equal and opposite reaction 3rd Law Force pairs happen on separate objects!!!

Examples of Newton’s Third Law 1. 2. Rocket Boat Person Thrust

Force A push or pull on an object Changes the STATE OF MOTION of an object CONTACT FORCE Physical interaction between objects FIELD FORCE “Action over a distance” Example: Gravity (Weight)

Types of Forces- Free Body Diagram Normal Force A reaction force that is always PERPENDICULAR to the surface Tension Force in a string that PULLS an object Friction A retarding force that OPPOSES MOTION Weight Pull from gravity ALWAYS STRAIGHT DOWNWARD Draw a

Newton’s Law Activity 1. Using a Balloon, straw string and tape. Design an experiment where a balloon rocket is fired at the wall. 2. Calculate the force that the balloon hits the wall with. 3. How does every law apply??? 4. Draw the free-body diagram
