Presentation transcript:

What kinds of dangers do you think these people faced? Warm Up Centuries ago in Europe, explorers sailed to find a new sea route to Asia. Europeans wanted to reach Asia by sea because it was so hard to reach by land, but, many died in the process. What kinds of dangers do you think these people faced? Why do you think they went so far to get something they thought was so valuable?

Academic Vocabulary Word of the Day Critique- Who can define this word for us? Who can use this word in a sentence for us?

Objective Students will understand where the Renaissance took place.

Something to keep in mind today… Imagine that the new iPhone can only be bought in California, so everyone in the United States is trying to find a way to get to California. Then the people of New York find their way to California to get the iPhone, but won’t let anyone from other states to use it. So other states have to begin exploring for new ways to get to California. *No cars, no planes, no trains, no boats.

Crusades The goal of the Crusades (1096-1204) was for the Europeans to gain back control of Christian Holy Sites in the Middle East. During the Crusades, an unplanned result emerged. Europeans came in contact with merchants who sold them spices, sugars, silk and their goods from Asia.

Do you think the discovery of these goods will lead to an increased interest in Asia? Why or why not? (Turn and talk) While at first, Europeans would buy these Asian goods from the Arabs, they eventually looked for routes to the east that would not require them to buy from Arab Merchants. Infer why these European explorers would not want to buy from these Arab merchants.

This idea of finding new trade routes is what sparked the beginning of the Renaissance period.

Guided Practice Lets take a look at the map on page 29. Together as a class lets highlight the different trade routes used to carry Asian goods to Europe. About how far is the east coast of China from Genoa and Venice? What did the long and difficult journey mean for the price and availability of Asian goods

Independent Practice Read “The Growth of Trade AND The Growth of Ideas” passages on page 29 and 30. What is the main idea of each of these passages? What advances were made during this time period? How did trade foster new ideas among different people and groups?

Group Work Write a 3-5 sentence paragraph explaining why each of these new items were exciting and positive for the lives of Europeans Spices for food Perfumes Precious stones and metals Silks

Exit Ticket Summarize todays lesson in a 5-7 sentence paragraph.

Homework How did the crusades influence trade? How did trade foster new ideas among different groups of people? What does the term renaissance mean?
