Welcome Intro1

Common Core State Standards to Common Core State Standards Intro2 . . . and Beyond!

Conversation: A Three-Minute Video on Common Core State Standards Video 1 (Lesson 1), Running time 3:00

DAP and the Common Core State Standards: Framing the Issues Video 2 (Lesson 1), Running time 4:53

5 Guiding Principles Lesson 1: Visual Aid 1, part 1

Five Guiding Principles College-and-career ready Use the best state standards Principles Solid evidence Clear focus Lesson 1: Visual Aid 1, part 2 Each item will appear automatically after first mouse click. Local flexibility, teacher judgment

85% 15% Standards Within Adopting States State Specific Standards (minimum) Common Core Standards (minimum) 85% Lesson 1: Visual Aid 2 Title will appear with slide. The balls will appear in order, animating the percentages. Standards Within Adopting States

The Standards Aligned with college and work expectations Clear, understandable and consistent Rigorous content and application Built upon best of current state standards Informed by other top performing countries Evidence-based (CCSSI, 2012) Lesson 1: Visual Aid 3

Key Changes and Their Evidence Lesson 2: Visual Aid 1, part 1

Key Changes and Their Evidence Shift one: Text complexity Shift two: Analyze, infer, give evidence Shift three: Writing to sources New emphasis on short focused research projects Lesson 2: Visual Aid 1, part 2 Each first level bullet requires a mouse click. Second level bullets will appear automatically. Shift four: Mastery of writing and speaking Focus on academic standards for English learners Shift five: Academic vocabulary

English Language Arts Standards: Key Changes and Their Evidence Video 3 (Lesson 2), Running time 6:25

Goldilocks and the Three Bears Evidence of persistence (Persistence is a CCSS academic vocabulary word.) Goldilocks was persistent when she tried the three bowls of porridge to find the one she liked. She was persistent when she tried three chairs to find the one that fit. Lesson 2: Visual Aid 2 Each bullet point will appear automatically with a 2 second pause between each. She was persistent when she tried all three beds to find the one she liked best.

The Balance of Informational and Literacy Texts in K-5 In elementary grades, reading is equally balanced between literature and informational texts. Lesson 2: Visual Aid 3, part 1 Each word will fade in individually with a 40% pause between words.

The Balance of Informational and Literacy Texts in K-5 What is more, students today are asked to read very little informational text. For example, as little as 7% of elementary and 15% of middle school instructional reading is informational. Lesson 2: Visual Aid 3, part 2 Each word will fade in individually with a 40% pause between words.

The Balance of Informational and Literacy Texts in K-5 The demands of college and career are 80% informational texts and 20% literature. Lesson 2: Visual Aid 3, part 3 Each word will fade in individually with a 40% pause between words.

Informational Text Structures Cause and effect Comparison and contrast Description Question and answer Simple listing Time order Lesson 2: Visual Aid 4 NOTE! The overlaid text at the bottom of the slide is not an error! This slide will show each bullet item with its description on mouse click. The bullet item will remain on screen, the description will fade. At end of slide, only the bullet points will remain. organizes information into a chronological sequence. arranges a group of facts, concepts, or events. presents a problem with a solution. analyzes similarities and differences among concepts and events. explains an idea or concept. presents how an event or fact brings about another event or result.

Who? What? Where? When? Why? How? Explain a process Compare and contrast Cause and effect Problem and solution Lesson 2: Visual Aid 5 Each bullet will “grow and turn” onto the slide. Each will appear automatically after the first (mouse click required for the first one only).

There are three types of writing To argue To inform and explain To tell a story Lesson 2: Visual Aid 6

In high school, students will write 80% of the time to explain or make arguments. Lesson 2: Visual Aid 7

Design and Organization Introduction Description of capacities of a literate student (ex., demonstrate independence, come to understand other perspectives and cultures) Lesson 2: Visual Aid 8, part 1

Design and Organization K-5 (cross-disciplinary) Three main sections K-5 (cross-disciplinary) < 6-12 English Language Arts < 6-12 Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science and Technical Subjects Lesson 2: Visual Aid 8, part 2

Design and Organization Research and evidence; glossary of key terms Three Appendices Research and evidence; glossary of key terms Reading text exemplars; sample performance tasks Annotated student writing samples Lesson 2: Visual Aid 8, part 3

Emphasis on short, focused research projects Lesson 2: Visual Aid 9

Good writing comes from good reading Lesson 2: Visual Aid 10

Preschool Writing Activities Type of Writing Preschool Activity Writing to inform or explain Tell how they go home after school Writing to provide strong arguments Tell why their favorite ice cream is the best Lesson 2: Visual Aid 11 After the title, each point will play by rows (Type of Writing will match with Preschool Activity) not in columns. Make up a story about their favorite animal Writing to tell a story

Student collaboration is key to preparing for college and career. Lesson 2: Visual Aid 12

Conventions of Standard English Writing and Speaking The new standards emphasize grammar and conventions. Good grammar is essential for college and career. Lesson 2: Visual Aid 13

Standards Mathematics Design and Organization The Mathematics Standards: How They Were Developed and Who Was Involved Standards for Mathematical Content K-8 Standards presented by grade level High School Standards presented by conceptual theme Design and Organization Lesson 3: Visual Aid 1, part 1

Standards Mathematics Design and Organization The Mathematics Standards: How They Were Developed and Who Was Involved Design and Organization Standards for Mathematical Practice Carry across all grade levels Describe habits of mind of a mathematically expert student Lesson 3: Visual Aid 1, part 2

Standards Mathematics Design and Organization The Mathematics Standards: How They Were Developed and Who Was Involved Design and Organization Appendix Designing high school math courses based on the Common Core State Standards Lesson 3: Visual Aid 1, part 3

Standards Mathematics The Mathematics Standards: How They Were Developed and Who Was Involved Math Standards stress focus and coherence. Many math professionals and organizations contribute to standards development Focus on number and operations in elementary school. Lesson 3: Visual Aid 1, part 4

Mathematics in the Early Grades Video 4 (Lesson 4), Running time 12:08

Mathematics Key Changes and Their Evidence Lesson 2: Visual Aid 1, part 1

Mathematic Key Changes and Their Evidence Shift one: Text complexity Shift two: Analyze, infer, give evidence, direct modeling, counting strategies, and number facts As number facts are learned, children apply this knowledge to solve problems This developmental approach differs from the practice of rote drill for memorization of fact. Child allowed to progress through the states develop number sense and mathematical reasoning. Lesson 3: Visual Aid 2, part 2

Mathematic Key Changes and Their Evidence Shift three: Writing to sources New emphasis on short focused projects based learning projects Shift four: Mastery of writing and speaking Focus on academic standards for English learners Using literature and cross content connections Lesson 3: Visual Aid 2, part 3 Shift five: Academic vocabulary
