New England Colonies Colonies: Plymouth – Massachusetts Bay – Providence, Rhode Island- New Haven - Connecticut Puritan Church and government were closely connected. Puritans – very strict laws – drunkenness, swearing, theft and idleness. Great importance placed on the family – too much government/community involvement led to dissenters. Limited Democracy – didn’t believe in total equality. BUT… Town Meeting was a very democratic feature of government for its time. Economy = trade-shipbuilding-fishing -farming-crafts Disputes over land with Native Americans and the definition of ownership of land. Political Structure: varied. Penn. used a representative assembly Penn. Quakers - Freedom of religion highly valued. Also believed that if you approach others in friendship they will respond with friendship. “brotherly love” and cooperation are greatly valued.
