New England Colonies Colonies: Plymouth – Massachusetts Bay – Providence, Rhode Island- New Haven - Connecticut Puritan Church and government were closely connected. Puritans – very strict laws – drunkenness, swearing, theft and idleness. Great importance placed on the family – too much government/community involvement led to dissenters. Limited Democracy – didn’t believe in total equality. BUT… Town Meeting was a very democratic feature of government for its time. Economy = trade-shipbuilding-fishing -farming-crafts Disputes over land with Native Americans and the definition of ownership of land. Led to the Pequot War Long-life expectancy – first Americans to have grandparents 6/2/2018

Middle Colonies Colonies Included: Pennsylvania- New York (New Netherland), New Jersey, Delaware Pennsylvania Founder – William Penn – Quaker that believed deeply in equality and cooperation. Political Structure: varied. Penn. used a representative assembly Penn. Quakers - Freedom of religion highly valued. Also believed that if you approach others in friendship they will respond with friendship. “brotherly love” and cooperation are greatly valued. Over 50 years – no major conflicts with Native Americans Created a court composed of Native Americans and colonists to regulate trade. 6/2/2018

Middle Colonies Other Colonies: New Netherlands (New York)- Many Dutch settled initially Dutch colonies. Most diverse region – many languages, cultures, religions, types of trade Very diverse productivity in crafts – trade – farming 6/2/2018

Southern Colonies Colonies Included: Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia Virginia: Jamestown -First English settlement Founder – John Smith and the Virginia Company. Main crop – “brown gold” – tobacco Indentured servants – 4-7 years – used to work on the plantations. Leaders of Jamestown demanded tributes of corn and labor from the local Native American people. House of Burgesses – 1st representative government Powhatan villages were set on fire and children were kidnapped. ( Powhatan Wars) 6/2/2018
