Dictatorship

Omar al Bashir President of Sudan

How he came to power Came to power in 1989 He was a general Convinced fellow officers to rebel "to save the country from rotten political parties.” Not so bad, right?

What was his purpose? The Sudan government had been in a civil war, and he didn’t like that they were going to sign a peace treaty. This would allow secular law, which meant that people could have more freedom He was supported by Islamists

What happened next? He signed a "constitutional decree" dismissing the government and other state bodies.

What happened next? He reorganized the government to boost the role of Islamists.

What happened next? He claimed people in his army were trying to overthrow him. Later that month, 31 army and police officers were executed.

Beginning of tyranny Over the next several years, al Bashir targeted different ethnic groups to be eliminated from Sudan They posed a threat to him because they did not like the way he was ruling, since he wanted an Islam government and they did not

Rebellion The Sudan Liberation Army (SLA) and Justice and Equality Movement (Jem) began attacking government targets in early 2003, accusing Khartoum of oppressing black Africans in favor of Arabs.

Genocide To date, over 300,000 people have died and over 2.7 million have been removed from their homes.

Result On July 12, the International Criminal Court charged Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir with three counts of genocide in relation to the Darfur conflict.  However, they can only arrest him if he leaves his country.
