What the bell symbolizes The Liberty Bell was named by abolitionists fighting to end slavery, they were looking for a symbol The bible verse on the bell reads: “Proclaim LIBERTY throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof” (Leviticus 25:10) Verse put on to celebrate William Penn’s charter of privileges William Penn allowed citizens to take part in making laws and gave them the right to choose the religion they wanted Philadelphia is the only place to 1701 that you can worship the way you want (only exception is that if you were Jewish or Catholic you could not hold office) Liberty=religious not political LIBERTY

Basic facts about the bell The bell for the Pennsylvania State House was casted in London, England, however, it cracked soon after it arrived in Philadelphia. Local craftsmen John Pass and John Stow casted a new bell in 1753. Their names are on the front of the bell, along with the city and the date. By 1846 a thin crack began to affect the sound of the bell. The bell was repaired in 1846 and rang for George Washington’s birthday celebration, but the bell cracked again and has not been rung since. (What we see is not the crack, it is the repair, the fatal crack is what silences the bell) The bell is around 2080 pounds. It is made of 70% copper, 25% tin, and small amounts of lead, zinc, arsenic, gold, and silver. It hangs from what is believed to be its original yoke, made from American elm.
