Club Council Presentation Communication across difference
Gallery Walk Answer the questions on the large post its Then stand next to the one that most resonated with you Whole group discussion
Framework Mindset of Student leader of a club “He/She isn’t doing what they’re supposed to be doing?” “I am doing everything for this event” “He/She isn’t coming to the meetings” This is what Tricia and I are hearing listening to student leaders engage in the planning process for programming and meetings Thoughts? Additions?
Internal Reflection Ask yourself these questions: Were meeting times set whole group? In these meetings were expectations set for behavior and follow through? Who, how, and what is used for accountability measures?
Think – Pair - Share Engage with the person next to you about these questions Share out to whole group 1- 2 min discussion
Leadership Principle: Congruence & Commitment Leadership Principle: Congruence and Commitment Congruent Individuals are able to “walk the talk” constant reflection if your values, leadership commitments are aligning to your actions? Commitment requires: Motivational energy to serve and that drives the collective effort. Implies passion, intensity, and durations directed both towards group activity and intended outcomes knowledge of self
What happens when a leader isn’t being congruent / lacking commitment?
What are some conflicts? Whole group discussion
Skills for effective Communication Set up Face to Face time to communicate logistics, planning, and brainstorming 2. Use Active Listening Skills – listen with intent and hear the other person – seek to understand and to be understood 3. Model and Practice Transparency and Honesty How do we effectively engage in these discussions? Practice practice practice – building a habit – will translate into the work force – transferrable skills 4. Follow through – Do your actions align to your commitments? Are you being a Congruent leader? 5. Set expectations in the beginning and make sure all Leaders are on the same page!
Let’s practice! Model behavior – lets practice each pair will get a scenario and you will engage in a conflict resolution type of meeting/conversation If we have time – would could engage them in a practice exercise!
