November 2016 Abstract This presentation introduces overall WUR MAC procedure that we can consider Mode transition between WUR and WLAN modes WLAN packet Tx to WUR STA WUR error recovery Consideration on wake-up packet WUR keep-alive check Kiseon Ryu et al, LG Electronics

Overall MAC Procedure for WUR November 2016 Overall MAC Procedure for WUR Kiseon Ryu et al, LG Electronics

November 2016 WUR Mode Signaling After the association procedure or receiving DL data completely, a STA may request to enter WUR mode for low power operation After receiving the confirmation (i.e., WUR mode response) from the AP, a STA enters the WUR mode For this procedure, an explicit WUR mode signaling is needed If the STA does not inform its 802.11 main radio turning off, then WUR AP can send 802.11 frames to the STA without sending WUR packet and it can be lost WUR operating parameter can be negotiated during WUR mode signaling Kiseon Ryu et al, LG Electronics

WLAN packet transmission to WUR STA November 2016 WLAN packet transmission to WUR STA Whenever an AP wants to send a WLAN packet to a STA in WUR mode, WUR packet should be transmitted to wake up the station After transmitting a WUR packet, AP should wait for a specific time before sending a WLAN data frame. WLAN main radio turn-on time can take about a few millisecond. Before WLAN packet transmission, STA’s wake-up can be confirmed through the existing WLAN control signaling (e.g., RTS/CTS, PS-Poll) Kiseon Ryu et al, LG Electronics

WUR Error Recovery November 2016 To handle the case that wakeup signaling fails, an error recovery mechanism shall be provided. When an AP sends data frame after WUR packet and does not receive ACK/BA, AP has to retransmit WUR packet or data frame. For the case of PS-Poll transmission in response to WUR packet, AP has to retransmit WUR packet if PS-Poll is not received within the certain period after sending WUR packet. Retransmission policy at AP should be defined to reduce power consumption and overhead Kiseon Ryu et al, LG Electronics

Consideration on WUR packet Month Year doc.: IEEE 802.11-yy/xxxxr0 November 2016 Consideration on WUR packet Multi-user WUR packet WUR packet should be able to wake up a single receiver or multiple receivers at the same time (Multi-user wake-up) Multi-user wake-up can reduce the contention or collision with WLAN/WUR packets in dense environment WUR packet can be sent for waking up all WUR receivers (e.g., DTIM traffic) Address in WUR packet WUR packet minimizes the false alarm of wake-up to avoid unnecessary power consumption of the WUR receiver Using unique receiver address (e.g., MAC Address) may increase the length of WUR packet Multi-user wake-up should be considered in WUR packet design Reduction of overhead and false alarm need to be considered for designing WUR packet Kiseon Ryu et al, LG Electronics John Doe, Some Company

WUR Keep Alive Check November 2016 WUR STA needs to know whether or not it is still in the TX range of the WUR AP [1] WUR keep-alive check If a STA in WUR mode does not receive any WUR packet from the WUR AP for a specific time duration, the STA needs to check if its transmitter is available or not. Passive method: The STA listens to any WLAN packet from its associated AP, Active method: The STA sends a WLAN frame (e.g., Probe Request, etc) for Keep alive checking. If the STA detects WLAN packet or receives response from its associated AP, the STA re-enters the WUR mode. Otherwise, STA may perform scanning procedure for discovering other BSS Kiseon Ryu et al, LG Electronics

November 2016 Conclusion For defining WUR MAC protocol, the following MAC functionalities needs to be provided Mode transition between WUR and WLAN modes Reliable WUR/WLAN packet transmission to WUR STA WUR packet error recovery WUR packet design considering low overhead/false alarm probability WUR keep-alive check Kiseon Ryu et al, LG Electronics
