Weather Map Symbols

Symbols on weather maps help us predict and know what is happening in different areas of the United States and the World.

For each symbol I would like you to: Write the name of the symbol in your notebook, 2) Draw a picture of the symbol in your notebook, 3) Briefly explain what that symbol tells us on a weather map.

Partly to mostly sunny days with little or no precipitation High Pressure Partly to mostly sunny days with little or no precipitation

Cloudy weather and maybe precipitation Low Pressure Cloudy weather and maybe precipitation

Cold Front Can trigger thunderstorms with large hail, dangerous winds, and even tornadoes

Warm Front Can bring warmer weather, but are full of moisture, which can mean a lot of rain.

Often bring several days of cloudy, wet weather. Stationary Front Often bring several days of cloudy, wet weather.

Often causes precipitation and can produce strong thunderstorms. Occluded Front Often causes precipitation and can produce strong thunderstorms.

Wind Symbol

Weather – None to report Wind Symbol Example Temperature - 46° Dew Point - 28° Air Pressure 116 millibars Winds NW at 21-25 mph Weather – None to report Sky - Clear

Wind Speed Chart

Symbols to Show Weather

Connects places that have the same air pressure. Isobars Connects places that have the same air pressure.

NOW… you should be ready to forecast and report weather! Let’s try!
