Famous people /events George Calvert believed all people should have religious freedom. In 1649, the Toleration Act was passed that guaranteed equality of rights for everyone for religion.

Famous people/events Roger Williams and Anne Hutchinson spoke out against the Puritans strictness and were asked to leave Massachusetts. They went to this area to settle and provide religious choice. Williams settles in Providence. Hutchinson settles in Portsmouth. Religious choice based on separation of church and state has its beginning here. Fair treatment of Native Americans was also encouraged.
