Westerly High School Community Service

Graduation Requirements 23 credits RI testing (TBD) Proficiency through Portfolio Proficiency through Senior Project 30 hours of Community Service

Participation and Expectations “All students must complete 30 hours of community service in a pre-approved setting. All community service hours must be completed, and forms submitted, by May 1st of the student’s senior year. Students are encouraged to complete the hours by the end of their sophomore year.” Page 36

30 HOURS Minimum of 30 total hours submitted and approved by dean or administrator All 30 hours do not need to be completed at the same organization/event You can submit more than 30 hours…looks good on scholarship, college and job applications 

“Pre-Approved” NOT approved Volunteering at non-profit organizations or agencies and community based centers that provide human or animal resources, such as NOT approved Tower Street Community Center Warm Shelter Hospital or Care facilities Johnny Cakes Center Animal Shelter Senior Center Church or place of worship South County Community Action Center Supper Table Ambulance or Fire Stations CERT student team Senior Nursing Homes Work done for FREE for a private or commercially owned company Rule of Thumb: if someone else is getting paid to do what you are asking to do, then it’s not considered community service.

Only a completed form can be submitted for hours to be filed Part A: Learning Part B: Student Evaluation Part C: Supervisor Evaluation Three Signatures Parent Student 3. Supervisor Only a completed form can be submitted for hours to be filed

FAQ If I volunteered in 8th grade, can I submit those hours? Do I need a separate form for every hour completed? Can I babysit or shovel someone’s driveway and not get paid? Can I file in the doctor’s office where my mom works? If I’m a class officer, can all the hours I put in an event count toward community service? If I lose credit in a class, can I use community hours I submitted towards credit recovery? Where can I find opportunities/places to volunteer? Can I submit more than 30 hours worth of community service? Who do I give my hours to? Why is this a graduation requirement? OTHER QUESTIONS?
