Present Simple VS. Continuous Year 3

Present Simple How: ?: auxiliary verb + Subject + main verb He/she/it: verb + s ?: auxiliary verb + Subject + main verb Does he always work on Fridays? - : Subject+ auxiliary verb + not + main verb He doesn’t work on Fridays.

Present Simple When: Permanent state or situation (gewoonte) Fact or something which is always true (feit) An activity which happens regularly or occasionaly (regelmaat)

State verbs Werkwoorden die bepaalde situaties beschrijven en dus geen ‘actie’ beschrijven staan meestal in een ‘simple’ vorm Categorie Werkwoord voorbeeld Thoughts Believe/ know /remember/forget/think/feel/guess/ suppose/understand DU: Ik begrijp nu wat je zegt. EN: I understand what you are saying now (niet: I am understanding) Feelings Like/hate/want/need/prefer DU: Ik heb je op dit moment nodig. EN: I need you now. (niet: I am needing you now) Senses Smell/taste/hear/see DU: Hoor je nu de muziek? EN: Do you hear the music now? (niet: Are you hearing the music now?) Possession Have/belong/own/ contain/include DU: Hij beheerst op dit moment het hele dorp. EN: He owns the entire villiage now. (niet: He is owning..) Existence Exist/remain/consist/ seem/mean/matter DU: De doelen blijven hetzelfde. EN: The goals remain the same (niet: the goals are remaining)

Present Continuous How: I am working at the moment To be + verb + ing I am working at the moment ?: to be + Subject + verb-ing Am I working at the moment? -: Subject + to be + not+ verb-ing I’m not working at the moment

Present Continuous When: A temporary situation (tijdelijke situatie) An activity happening at the moment (iets wat nu bezig is) An activity in progress but not exactly at the present moment (iets wat bezig is, maar niet actief op dit moment) A situation which is changing or developing (iets wat ‘aan het’ veranderen is Things the speaker finds strange or annoying (irritatie) Something which happens frequently (always): Een ACTIE die regelmatig voorkomt.

State verbs Sommige ‘state verbs’ kunnen een duurvorm (continuous) krijgen wanneer ze acties beschrijven Categorie Werkwoord Voorbeeld Thoughts Think DU: Ik denk na over wat je hebt gezegd. EN: I am thinking about what you said. Feelings Feel DU: Ze voelt zich ongelukkig op dit moment. EN: She is feeling unhappy at the moment Senses See / taste/ smell DU: Ik proef nu alvast de taart om zeker te weten dat het nog goed is. EN: I am tasting the cake now to make sure it is still OK.
